Any chance of using something like this (supported on linux x86) on sparc:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815124020

I'm not interested in booting from it, just looking for data storage. I've heard nothing about sata on sparc, so no idea if this is a no-brainer "yes it works" or some kind of golgothan obstacle ... Thoughts?

IIRC, people on the debian-sparc ML have reported success getting SATA controllers working in the fashion you're looking for. You might try searching their archives for more info (don't recall the details off the top of my head).
