I am a bit daft when it comes to networking . . . but I am willing to read if I can be pointed in the right direction . . .

I have a linksys 4 port router that I am using to connect to my adsl provider. It works well.

What annoys me is that for the lan the dhcp server on the router resets the ip address that the 4 computers in my house are using -- this mangles my /etc/hosts definitions, and as a result my samba fileserver, ssh server etc is a pain.

I have heard about locking ip addresses to mac address -- is this possible with the linksys, I don't see the feature in the webadmin.

Using static ip's is not an option as my roomates are using windows, and demand dhcp.

If setting up a dns server is the only solution does anyone know of a good basic intro?

Gabriel

You can't assign specific IP addresses with the Linksys based on MAC address, but you can assign a specific IP to you linux box and still let all the other PCs on the network pick theirs up via DHCP from the router. The router doesn't care if you already have an IP address, it will still work just fine.

This is how I have my home network set up. The router is 192.168.1.1, my linux box is statically assigned to 192.168.1.2, and the other PCs (Windows and Macintosh) are using 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.104 via DHCP. We had a power outage yesterday and all the other PCs ended up with different IPs when they rebooted, but the linux box was still the same as it always is.

I have a linksys router too, and I solved this problem by just not using dhcpc to get my ips.

On my linux boxes, I edit /etc/conf.d/net to set the ip address, netmask, and gateway. On my windows box, I set up my connection manually too.

Under Network Connections => Bridge => Properties select Internet TCP/IP. Then you can manually set the ip,netmask...

This is the easiest solution I've found.

Oh yeah. One more thing. If you do want to use dhcpc to configure your ips, you can set the lease time to something big (99999999999) to decrease the chances of computers switching ips on you.

well the statically configuring my linux box worked great! (just had to realize I need to add the router as my gateway)

my roomates are using dhcp, and all is well,
thanks a lot for the help.

You can also turn off the DHCP server on the router and set up a dhcp server n the linux box that CAN be set up to give out IPs based on MAC address and can send all the gateway, dns server info to the cleints as well just like the linksys box does.

Here is a link to a document I put together describing how one can set up a server which provides DHCP+DNS to local clients.

http://www.vandogh.com/home_network.txt

Maybe somebody will find it useful.
