1. Boot with "debug" parameter (i.e., gentoo debug docache)

2. At the debug prompt:
Code:
# echo /sbin/udev > /proc/sys/kernel/hotplug

3. Unplug the cdrom then plug it back in.

4. Wait for about 30 seconds. Verify your USB-cdrom by checking its presence on /dev (usually its /dev/sr0, or find anything with a pattern "sXn")
Code:
# ls /dev/sr0
/dev/sr0

5. If there's sr0 on /dev then at the debug prompt:
Code:
# exit

I'm no expert with linux so, I don't know if this helps other users with similar problem. But this solution worked for me. ^^ cheers! Taken from https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-369937.html

hello

i've tested this, when looking here :
cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info
or here :
dmesg | grep CD

i well see that my CD-ROM drive must be /dev/sr0 but when i look directly in /dev or when i attemp to set root on it as need for the installation, there is no more sr0

( I'm on a tabletPC Ndeo B12 with an external USB drive ( usb rack for 5 1/4 ide drive and a ide dvd drive plugged in it ) )

if anybody have an idea ;)

PS : why this kind of booting was working fine with 2004.x gentoo minimal CD, was working with 2005.0 if typing /dev/ram0 and coming harder now ?

PS2 : sorry for my poor english i'm french

This solution did not work for me (it worked only on the 2005.1 livecd), but I have found a simpler solution.

You just have to type :

Code:

gentoo dobladecenter

This option add some pauses to wait the initialization of the USB cdrom drive.

My system is a Panasonic CF-R4 with an external USB 2.0 dvd burner (Pioneer slot-in)

Code:
gentoo dobladecenter

This was also required to boot 2006.0 off a USB-cdrom on a SunFire X2100

Thank you!
"gentoo dobladecenter" works for a HP BL25p using a virtual cd-rom from HP iLO.
