|

I had kde-3.1 and kde-3.0.5a installed. Yesterday I rsynced and noticed a new version of kde, kde-3.1.1 was available.
So I put emerge to work to update kde. Today I come back, and it appeared to have finished.
So I started X and kde-3.1.1. I got all sorts of messages about mime-types not available and kioslaves not functioning etc etc etc.
I went to do some investigation, and it appeared that portage had installed kde3.1.1 in /usr/kde/3.1/ as well.
So I tried to start kde3.0.5a, but the same problem. All three seem to have merged or and crippled eachother.
As a solution I've un-emerged all kde packages of all versions, and I'm compiling kde-3.1.1 all over again now. But I'm not too happy with it.
What happened here? Something is wrong in de kde-3.1.1 ebuild that makes it install over the old one or something? _________________ Pentium 4 Prescott 3,2 GHz

I have had the same problem myself. There has to be a better way than to unmerge and remerge, but I don't see any other options. The files are there, but if you attempt to run them from the run menu, they die. When you click on the K, there's nothing there. |

I was running KDE 3.1.0 when I emerged 3.1.1 and had no such problems. Did you try to do an etc-update after the emerge? Could be there are config files that needed updating. _________________ After Perl everything else is just assembly language. |

Yes I updated all my config files. I have a policy of overwriting all config files unless I explicitly know I changed them, after which I check what the changes are.
As I didn't change any of KDE's files, I've just overwritten all files.
Kde-3.1.1 has finished compiling and it's all up and running properly now.
But I still think that it should've been installed in a separate directory, like /usr/kde/3.1.1/
The only reason I can think of for this problem is that I upgraded KDE using kportage, while running KDE. But as far as I know, upgrading running programs shouldn't cause any problems. _________________ Pentium 4 Prescott 3,2 GHz

It's caused by some wackiness between 3.0.5 and the newer versions. If you unmerge 3.0.5, you should be able to get it working without remerging 3.1.1. |

Maybe that'd be integrated into the ebuild then? _________________ Pentium 4 Prescott 3,2 GHz
