I had some troubles with nautilus because it wasn't displaying anything it would just hang. I changed some themes and its stuffed it somehow.
So I tried to emerge nautilus again but since I updated using emerge --sync it downloaded the latest version etc. But it required the 2.6.13 kernel so went ahead and downloaded that. Once that was done though oh well might as well upgrade the whole gnome. emerge gnome doesn't work, emerge gnome-light almost worked but failed at one file. I think I need to start again
I currently have the 2.6.11-r7 kernel installed
Updated portage just a week ago

Should it be easy to just reinstall using the 2006 install disks?

My main consern is if my resierfs partition on my 2nd hdd is going to safe. And I hope I can keep my /usr/portage/ or does the 2006 contain all the main sourcefiles? I use openoffice and I doubt thats on the disk.

/dev/hda1 /boot
/dev/hda2 /
/dev/hda3 /swap

/dev/hdb1 /windows xp
/dev/hdb2 /home on reiserfs

And if you havn't noticed I'm on 56k, downloading a 1GB file like openoffice is out of the question, although I once thought a the 29mb kernel was impossible :o

Hi.

With Gentoo there's no need to reinstall the system just to upgrade. You only need to sync the Portage tree, emerge --sync, and upgrade your system with emerge -aDpv world, although I always prefer to use hielvc's emwrap.sh, once in a while to have your system up to date. When a new profile, such as the 2006.0, is released, you need to update the /etc/make.profile symlink and then to update your system.
If you have problems emerging packages, instead of reinstalling, search in the forums and if you can't find anything related ask for help.

Be a million times more specific about exactly what failed and how

If you want to be 100% safe, leave your second harddrive unplugged during the installation.
