Backups of large partitions can be made by tape (icky!), over the network (via rsync, Ghost, or others), or burned onto CDs (Drive Image, many Linux projects).
Or, you could just get a stack of hard drives and RAID 5 'em. (Right, it does nothing for recovering data, reverting the whole system, etc. but at least it protects from disk failure. ) |

If your a windows user, powerquest makes a really nice tool that allows you to backup an ext3 partition directly to cdrom and compresses it substantially. If all you use is linux, then you can use bzip2 compression and achieve some good compression also, 1.3 gigs could perhaps be compressed into a single 700 meg or less file then decompressed directly from cd back to a blank partition. _________________ This message self destructed a long time ago. |

Well, I never thought of using compression before burning to CD, strange... Thanx for the hint! _________________ Linux user #216018 |

I always try to keep my Linux systems below 1.3 GB so that a full backup (of the live system) fits on two CD-R's.
Anyone? |
backup? I know not of this backup. Is this like the time thay said i shouldn't always be logged in as root?
Meh, i don't have anything important on my system. Anything important that i do have i have a copy on my laptop and desktop, so as long as one of them is working i'm good. |

Hmm, this means your laptop is your backup (or desktop, depends on the way you look at them...) _________________ Linux user #216018 |
