I just migrated to modular xorg 7.1, and every thing went smoothly except when I try to run xterm in my new xorg environment, nothing happens.

The only error message I get on VT1 is:

Code:

xterm: error while loading shared libraries: libXaw.so.8: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Yeah I know it is a problem with libXaw, but the newest version is already installed. Do I have to add something to my path?

You might need to re-emerge xterm so that it will link to the new version of libXaw.

After getting my desktop up and running, I decided to upgrade my HD recording box to the latest stuff, too.

But I forgot to specify the INPUT_DEVICES and VIDEO_CARDS lines in make.conf for modular X.

Now I have all of these extra drivers in my TV box which the OS partition is somewhat limited in space.

What is the best way to clean out all of the unneeded modular X drivers?

Thanks!

I had the same problem under ~amd64. Just to repeat what was said, don't allow any updates past version 1.0.0.5. It will render your keyboard pretty much useless. (I thought my hardware was broken until I tried another keyboard and saw that they were both broken under X)

Most of the time ~arch packages are safe. THIS ISN'T ONE OF THEM.

xf86-input-evdev-1.1.5-r1 works. Don't using anything between 1.0.0.5 and 1.1.5-r1.

Well I took the plunge like so many and have upgraded to the latest modula xorg. I thought everything went smooth and for most part I'm sure it has. The only issue I am having is the following when trying to start application that requires glx:

Code:
error while loading shared libraries: libnvidia-tls.so.1: cannot handle TLS data

This is the error in my xorg log:

Code:
(II) LoadModule: "glx"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
dlopen: libnvidia-tls.so.1: cannot handle TLS data
(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
(II) UnloadModule: "glx"
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (loader failed, 7)

I'm also using kernel 2.6.16-gentoo-r9

Can anyone help me out here or at least point me to some instructions which may resolve this issue. I have done numerous searches but haven't found any solution.

RESOLVED: The following worked for me.

Code:
# mv /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.8776  /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.8776.bak
# mv /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/no-tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.8776 /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.8776
# mv /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.8776.bak /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/no-tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.8776

I have been having problems with emerge xorg-x11 refusing to under stand my INPUT_DEVICES and VIDEO_CARDS so I tried emerge xorg-server and that has used the drivers ignored by xorg-x11.

Can someone explain what the difference is, do I get the same code from both?

I have been using the modular xorg for a few months now without issues. I even use the suspend kernel and everything has been fine until yesterday. I shut my computer down at night like usual. I started it up in the morning and X would not load. gdm starts up but only displays a white/black striated screen with a watch for a cursor. I can move the cursor so I assume the mouse is working. When I run startx I only get a black screen with a X for a cursor and then it dies. There is no "EE" error messages in the Xorg.log file which is attached below. Any suggestions?

mattmann72,

I'm having the same problem https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-539491.html, we are both using ATI cards, but not the same card (mine is old).

mattmann72,

Try running revdep-rebuild - there was an update to dbus that broke some of GNOME's dependencies. Revdep-rebuild fixed it for me.

Hey there!

I got the same problem like the guys in here: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-516271.html

So when I reboot/shutdown my comp, my screen gets white with black, thin stripes and changes color from white to grey and back again in a pretty freaky fashion ;).

However, unlike the guys in the thread, i'm not using any opensource drivers. i am using the closed nvidia drivers (right at the moment i am installing the -r1 package of the latest nvidia drivers).

since it seems to be a driver problem, i'll spare the xorg conf for now. if you need it, just tell me. i'll gladly post it :). so if anyone got a clue, i'd be very happy about that.

xorg: 7.2
nvidia: 1.0.9755 (just installed -r1)
kernel: 2.6.20-gentoo-r2 (just installed -r3)

//edit: ok, the latest nvidia and kernel versions didn't help it.

hello guys,

i've got another problem here with xorg (stable, 7.1). after a kernel-upgrade from 2.6.18-gentoo-r6 -> 2.6.19-gentoo-r5 (make oldconfig), xorg dies with this error at startup:
Code:

Dear Gentoo developers!

Please note that after removing /usr/X11R6 a dangling symlink /usr/include/Gl -> /usr/X11R6/GL was still left, which caused me a lot of trouble during my migration to the modular X. Well, that's what I experienced.
Namely, these packages failed to be installed:

virtual/opengl-7.0
virtual/glu-7.0
virtual/glut-1.0
x11-proto/glproto-1.4.8
media-libs/mesa-6.5.1-r1
media-libs/freeglut-2.4.0
x11-base/xorg-server-1.1.1-r4
x11-drivers/xf86-video-i810-1.6.5
x11-drivers/xf86-video-mga-1.4.2
x11-drivers/xf86-video-savage-2.1.1
x11-drivers/xf86-video-via-0.2.1-r1
x11-drivers/xf86-video-glint-1.1.1
x11-drivers/xf86-video-tdfx-1.2.1-r1
x11-drivers/xf86-video-sis-0.9.1-r1

I removed the symlink and all went well afterwards. I suggest you include a utility like symlink in the ebuilds to get rid of all messy symlinks, at least in the system directories. That would make the migration process a lot easier, I think.

After reading some posts about updating system, finally I decided to migrate to modular X server. I followed howto on the gentoo.org website. Everything seemed to be ok, untill I started emerging xorg-x11. Everytime I try to compile xorg-server I get this error:

I tried to do few things, but nothing helped. After spending few hours in front of my console, I made up my mind to get back to my old xorg server.
I typed:
Code:
emerge --usepkgonly xorg-x11

but that's all I have got:
Code:

Here is what I have:
Code:
$ equery belongs X.h
x11-proto/xproto-7.0.10 (/usr/include/X11/X.h)

$ equery belongs Xatom.h
x11-proto/xproto-7.0.10 (/usr/include/X11/Xatom.h)

So, do the upgrade properly:
Code:
emerge -pvuDN world

I get almost the same, except for version of xproto which is 7.0.5 on my computer.

I tried
Code:
emerge -pvuDN world
before, but I have strong blocking from kde-base:

What am I supposed to do now? Isn't it all about setting some variables?

hello guys,

i've got another problem here with xorg (stable, 7.1). after a kernel-upgrade from 2.6.18-gentoo-r6 -> 2.6.19-gentoo-r5 (make oldconfig), xorg dies with this error at startup:

Code:

Fatal server error:

I got the same backtrace after a 2.6.19-r5 to 2.6.20-r8 upgrade I did to fix a sound driver bug. I did have an extra line, though, from my xinerama flag. I couldn't figure this out all day until I saw your post and finally noticed the "MotionEvents." Then it was one of those shimmering moments of "oh man that was too simple; now I feel really smart." All I did was switch to
Code:

   Driver "mouse"
   Option "Device" "/dev/input/mouse0"

from evdev + event1.

Hi all,
I tried to follow Gentoo inst. doc http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/modular-x-howto.xml,
but stacked on
Code Listing 2.6: Installing the modular metabuild:

# emerge xorg-x11
# etc-update
# revdep-rebuild
# [[ -e ~/usr-x11r6-packages ]] && emerge
$(<~/usr-x11r6-packages)

First 3 are no problem, but # [[ -e ~/usr-x11r6-packages ]] && emerge just shows Usage of emerge command, nothing more, any sugestions?

Thanks
V.
