Hi All,
I've this problem that some programs generate huge amounts of text and I cannot read the beginning because I cannot scroll var enough backwards...... For example, using mldonkey via telnet ......
So how do I increase the number of lines that I can scroll back, or is that xterm dependent ? If so, lets discuss the Gnome terminal ?
Thanks in advance

I don't use xterm any more, but gnome-terminal lets you set the number of scrollback lines to whatever you want (I have it at 2000 lines right now).
Plus I've been using the Gnome 2.14 development release (that will be officially released within a couple of weeks) and thanks to a lot of performance-related tweaking gnome-terminal is now faster than xterm. I don't know how long before that hits Portage and becomes stable, but it's something to look forward to. |

XTerm*saveLines: 9999 in ~/.Xdefaults is your friend.
Or/and I highly recommend screen for such purposes like watching server processes. |

Amen to that. There's nothing like screen if you're doing an "emerge -e world". |

Nothing stupid about your question. screen lets you have multiple virtual terminal screens running from a single terminal. The really cool thing is you can detach a screen/reattach later. So, the last time I started an "emerge -e world" I used screen in a gnome terminal, started the emerge, detached the screen and logged out of Gnome with the process still running, logged in via ssh from another computer later and attached to the running screen so I could monitor its progress, detached again, etc. |
