Hi everyone!
I've got a problem with my Canon N1240U Scanner, which should be supported by sane (see http://www.gjaeger.de/scanner/plustek.html ).
But I cannot get the bloody thing working!
So here you have the output of the most important tools:
root@bart ralph # cat /proc/bus/usb/devices

root@bart ralph # sane-find-scanner
# No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
# you have loaded a SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.
# Also you need support for SCSI Generic (sg) in your operating system.
# If using Linux, try "modprobe sg".
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9, product=0x220e) at /dev/usb/scanner0
# Your USB scanner was detected. It may or may not be supported by
# SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.
----------------------------------
The file /etc/modules.conf contains:
...
#Scanner
options scanner vendor=0x04a9 product=0x220e
---------------------------------
My /etc/sane.d/plustek.conf contains:
[usb] 0x04a9 0x220e
device /dev/usb/scanner0
---------------------------------
But scanimage -L does not find the scanner !!!
----------------------------------
root@bart ralph # scanimage -L
No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
----------------------------------
root@bart ralph # scanimage -d plustek:/dev/usb/scanner0
scanimage: open of device plustek:/dev/usb/scanner0 failed: Error during device I/O
-----------------------------------
First I thought it would have something to do with the permissions of the device, but I set the permissions to 777, so that nothing could go wrong concerning this, but I got the same results as above...
Anybody have an idea???
So long!

Hi ... I'm having a very similar problem with an (unsupported & therefore alpha code) HP Scanjet 5400c ... I've got to the same point, and it does the same thing. It all suggests to me that sane is not finding the driver I think I've installed ... simply because sane-find-scanner works, and scanimage -f doesn't ... annoying any help / suggestions anyone ??? but I guess it's nice to know you're not alone ... |

Sorry I didn't mention it here, but upgrading to sane-backends 1.0.11 solved my problem altogether. The only thing I still had to do ist creating a file called "scanner" in /etc/devfs.d/ with the following entries (for the devfs device permissions):
# Manage USB scanner Canon N1240U
REGISTER usb/scanner0 PERMISSIONS root.users 660
Thanks for your reply

Hi,
With the help of this post I also got my Canon scanner going... but...
Is sane safe to use? My scanner is making really weird noises while using xsane - compared to what it sounded like under windows. It's a lot more harsh and high pitched sounding while scanning... what's the deal? Also the little scanner light never goes off.
What do you think the difference in noise could be? Is sane a more violent driver?
