matrox G550 probs

ok i emerged Xfree 4.3 and gnome 2.2.1 and also kde 3.1

but when i log into gnome 2.2.1 it only owkrs in 8bpp

and i can improve the quality
?

im using the iiyama 4637 18.1 lcd screen ?

matrox drivers wont compile for xfree 4.3 so can anyone help
?? gnome looks nasty in 8bpp PLEASE HELP
