EDIT 1 : I just spotted something : in the portage overlay there is a mesa alpha ebuild, which I didn't unmask (the wiki howto forgot to tell me so...). I'm compiling it right now.
EDIT 2 : I compiled coffee's mesa (rev 43), but that doesn't change anything. Do I have also to rebuild glitz and xgl ? |
Well, that is solved now.
But now i have this, when starting gnome-window-decorator : "Failed to load shadow image." or something like this.
I know many people have this problem too, but did anybody find a solution ?
Thanks ! |

On Weekend there was the Linuy-Day in Chemnitz(Germany).
In one of the Parts they Intruduced Xgl well-working.
My try faults on the usual
compiz: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
compiz: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz: No managable screens found on display :1
witch turns on but with no decorations and effects.
i Tried the LD_LIBRARY..... tried reemerge but i found no solution.
however fluxbox works well in Xgl, but no effects
does anyone has another idea than LD_LIBRARY? |

I hope your using LD_LIBRARY_PATH .. not LD_LIBRARY, and if so what version of mesa you got installed? i bet you my left arm its 6.4.2 and i'll bet you my first born if you correctly unmask the alpha ebuild and emerge mesa from cvs this problem will dissappear. _________________ HP Pavilion zd7260us

Now it seems to work well (with kde, with a bugus system tray since I haven't emerged the modified kdelibs).
But still no window decoration. What can I do ? |

I just had quite a headache with missing window-decorations. In case you do
Code: |
export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1
|
before starting compiz your gnome-window-decorator will not show anything and give various error messages instead (sometimes none, or "No GL visual for 32 depth" or "failed to load shadow images").
For those having problems with KDE internet programs (especially konqueror, but also akregator, kopete, ...) hanging: Try to kill all programs that might be in Systray but are not shown there but in an extra (small) window or even not shown at all (like kgpg, kopete, kmix, akregator, kget, ...) If I kill those programs konqueror suddenly lightens up and all works as expected. If you patched your kdelibs you can restart the systray-programs afterwards. On startup of kde, the kdepatch strangely does not work (at least for me), I guess because I launch compiz via the Autostart-Folder, which is too late for some programs.

Thank you, that did the trick !
(I had
export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 because of an old bug with the composite extention, but I think it is not useful anymore)
Well for me as well, kde is unusable. Windows disapear when minimized, etc.
And even despite the patch for kdelibs, nothing appears in the system tray.
Something is odd also : Xgl is sometimes pretty fast, sometimes very slow, without any apparent explanation. |

The black windows problem was common, and seems to have been resolved for many in a recent glitz cvs.
Now, how about white windows?
Everything compiled fine, I've gone over it a couple times to make sure the order was correct.
XGL runs, I can start an application, but running compiz makes the background blue, and the windows completely white.

Thank you Coffee. Hanno's overlay was overriding yours so I thought I was seeing the latest ebuild. An emerge of the latest Xgl build did the trick. |

Just to say that another XGL powered guy (me) is on earth. Thank you Coffe, I'm using your overlay
Impressions: very nice, not so fast (at least with my xp1700+gf4mx420), definitely a must have for a geek-tester
Anyway, some apps to not work properly. Multimedia players, for example, take the cpu to 100% and/or misbehave |

I've just finished installing Xgl and it seems to work perfectly.. I have only one question: when I tried the live cd with Xgl the windows movement looked better, and now along the windows borders I see a bad effect, like the one for which you activate VSYNC in the videogames.. I hope you understood what is the problem (a better definition of my problem can be "the picture is teared horizontally into pieces, and it's really no joy for your eyes" taken from Internet about the vsync problem).. How can I activate VSYNC on my Nvidia 6600Go? nvidia-settings does not work anymore because of this problem:
Code: |
Xlib: extension "NV-CONTROL" missing on display ":1.0"
|
Any suggestion?

I tried to enable it by adding the proper environment variable to /etc/profile (I do not remember the exact variable at the moment, and I do not have Nvidia-Glx documentation on the pc where I'm writing), but I'm not able to understand if it is enabled or not.. I think it is, since if I enable the antialiasing in the same way it gets enabled (everything slows down).. You can find the names of the environment variables related to nvidia with:
Code: |
less /usr/share/doc/nvidia-glx/README.gz
|
Now the problem with the borders of the windows seems less visible. Try in this way..
[EDIT]
To enable VSYNC add the following line in /etc/profile (I think this is the right way of doing it):
Code: |
export __GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK=1
|

I set that in /etc/profile, logged it and started xgl. echo $__GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK
returns a 1, but I still get some tearing in XGL. |

Yes, there are still some graphical problems... If someone is able to make them disappear, just tell us ! _________________ (Our) system as a whole is more or less the GNU system, with Linux added.

You are not using nvidia glx drivers (you are using mesa) so nvidia-settings cannot show you nvidia-glx info !!
Next nvidia drivers are supposed to support extension needed for XGL... until then, cannot work. _________________ "May God stands between you and harm in all the empty places where you must walk" - Babylon 5 |

Actually, you _are_ using nvidia drivers, only compiz uses mesa, Xgl itself and all OpenGL stuff you run (e.g. games) use the nvidia driver. The problem is that Xgl doesn't support the nv-control extension, which is needed to configure the card. |

Put the LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/ before compiz command line

even with LD_LIBRARY_PATH I get that error.
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/ compiz --replace
compiz: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
compiz: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz: No managable screens found on display :1.0
Any hints anybody? Or a link? (it is not funny to search ~40 forum sites of XGL threads ... ) _________________ Study finds stunning lack of racial, gender, and economic diversity among middle-class white males
