Hello,

I tried to install Gentoo linux on a Sun Ultra 60 using the Gentoo Linux Sparc Quick Install Reference.
Now, the system is starting SILO, then it fails because it cannot find an image.
The error message is as follows:

Cannot find /vmlinux (Unknown ext2 error)
Image not found.... try again.

Actually, I didn't create a /boot partition, because it was not written in the Install Ref. Later on it appeared in Chap 8 for the
creation of /etc/fstab. Sometimes it was confusing cause different systems were treated in parallel.
Do I need a /boot partition for my Sun Ultra or not?
Now, how can I fix this error? Do I have to configure the kernel again?

Thank you in advance

even though you didn't create a /boot partition, there should be a /boot directory in your filesystem tree.

The vmlinux should probably be "/boot/vmlinuz" (note the z instead of the x) in your bootloader config

that should fix your problems

I am sure it's called vmlinuz. Boot the LiveCD again, mount your partition(s) and check for the exact name of the kernel... You don't need a seperate /boot partition of you don't want. Just make sure you have it right in /etc/fstab.

Moved from Installing Gentoo to Gentoo on Sparc.
Probably better off here

hi,

i had the same problem with my installs..

for me it was caused by running the silo -C within the chroot...

What i did was get out of the chroot.. and then passed the path (i thought the -r switch) to silo and hey it worked.
As silo runs from the boot partition alle references to files are seen from that boot partition.. so it is not anymore in the /boot dir.

so play around with the paths i learned gentoo @ sparc completely by trial and error as silo (in combo) with hardware is somtimes complete crap

good luck.

if you have got questions try also to tell what you have tried..

I got this same error message after doing an emerge -u system. (I think that it was the udev/baselayout that did it). My /etc/silo.conf was overwritten in the emerge, and replaced with the "default" one which does no one any good (why is it not called silo.conf.example?) I was completely dumbfounded since my kernel wasn't called vmlinuz or vmlinux anyway =)

I booted from CD, fscked my filesystems, then mounted my root fs, (I can no longer chroot!) deouble-checked my silo.conf (which I hadn't thought changed.. but it had). Writing a new one that pointed to my actual kernel fixed it.

Also, I'm not running a separate /boot partition, but like the handbook suggests, just booting from my root fs, and so have an ext3 and not an ext2 filesystem there. As long as I remember to turn on ext3 in the kernels when I compile, I've had no problems =)
