RESOLVED -- auctex-1181 gets "void-variable AUCTeX-version"

This is not a problem unique to Gentoo, see http://blog.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.auctex.devel/day=20060116 and look for "void". But people might want ot avoid upgrading to auctex-11.81, until the problem is fixed.

This problem remains for versions 11.82 and 11.83, but 11.83 works fine on my laptop. Still hoping for a solution. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I'm running a 64 bit system (opteron)? Thanks,

Evidently this problem was caused by having a version of tex-site.elc that was older than tex-site.el. I have no idea how that happened, but recompiling tex-site.el fixed the problem.
