Hello,

I am having a problem running gui applications as root in gnome. I log on as a user, and from the commandline run commands, but get errors.

Code:
adamtux gdm # evince

(evince:8567): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.

** (evince:8567): WARNING **: Service registration failed.

** (evince:8567): WARNING **: No reply within specified time

A graphical error message also comes up:
Quote:
An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for Evince. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly.

And there is a text box on the graphical error message containing:
Quote:

This has caused me a lot of annoyance and confusion.

I run gnome 2.16 (although the problem has persisted since I ran gnome 2.12). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Adam

As the user, run xhost (this has security implications, see man page for details and usage), in a root xterm set $DISPLAY (eg to :0.0) and then launch the app.

It looks like you have some stale NFS locks as the error message says. Have you tried deleting them?

Code:
rm -r /tmp/gconf-USERNAME

where USERNAME is the username of the dekstop with the trouble. You can also try deleting /tmp/orgit-USERNAME as well.

This can happen if your system has ever shutdown unexpectedly.

Cheers,
