i had a similar problem, after i decided to download and install some of the extensions. all of the sudden, firebird wouldn't display the window anymore as a normal user. unmerging firebird, and then deleting /usr/lib/MozillaFirebird, and emerging mozilla-firebird again did the trick for me. that wasn't the only problem i have encountered either, but it doesn't bother me, since i know that firebird is still under development (that's why the ebuilds are definitly masked). look's really great though :) im excited about where firebird is heading...

Firebird sticks the extensions in the /usr/lib/ firebird directory. You can either chmod 777 -R /usr/lib/MozillaFirebird or change the group of the dir to include write support for your users group.
