I just recently upgraded from Gnome 2.12.0 to Gnome 2.12.2. I also recently upgraded my kernel from gentoo-sources-2.6.11-r6 to gentoo-sources-2.6.14-r5.

I'm thinking my problem is related to gnome: I mainly just type english on my keyboard, but as a Spanish minor I do need to type in Spanish from time to time for my classes. I accomplished this before by assigning the right Alt key as the "Compose" key in the keyboard preferences dialogue in gnome. After my upgrade to 2.12.2, my compose key stopped working (making it so I can't write accents or tildes). Here is the error I get when Gnome starts and when I try to edit the settings:

Code:
Error activating XKB configuration.
It can happen under various circumstances:
- a bug in libxklavier library
- a bug in X server (xkbcomp, xmodmap utilities)
- X server with incompatible libxkbfile implementation

X server version data:
Gentoo (The X.Org Foundation 6.8.2, revision r4-0.1.10.2)
60802000

If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
- The result of xprop -root | grep XKB
- The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd

here's what I get:

Code:
tux chris # xprop -root | grep XKB
_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = "xorg", "dell101", "us", "", ""
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xorg", "dell101", "us", "", ""
tux chris # gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd
 layouts = [us]
 model = generic
 overrideSettings = false
 options = []

I saw some other threads on the issue but other people were trying to change language setups and the fix was to set it in xorg.conf manually.

The problme at least in my case was not related to Xorg configuration beacuse I was able to login as a different user with no problems. So I came up with a hack: I removed ~/.gnome2 and ~/.gnome2_private files of the user that had trouble logging in. This fixed the errors: I was able to login without errors and my keyboard is working now. I lost some of my panel configuration however.

If you think this is worth mentioning as a valid solution please edit your original post's topic and add [SOLVED].

Unfortunately, at least in my case, the above solution worked only until I rebooted my box :( . To fix it permatnetly I had to remove .gconf, .gconfd and .gnome in addition to the files I removed previously. This resutlted in loosing all my desktop custom configuration.

It is quite probable that removing just one of these files could fix the problem but I did not have time to investigate this further.

BTW. This also fixed my other problem: evo exchange would not work correctly see bug #121242

Hm. Haven't rebooted yet, but I'll report back when I do.
