I hate compiling a new kernel, I *always* screw something up. But it seems it must be. I'll report back when I'm done.

i dont know where i read this but i think i can recall somebody talking about a note in the recent udev changlogs saying that it strictly depends on a certain kernel version. so this sounds plausible...

indeed i played around with udev update as well but switched back to 077.... damn that i forgot this ;) hope you all are enjoying your music again?

cheers

Well, upgrading the kernel worked for me. I still say this is a bug. Has to be.

I was having similar issues here with an intel8x0 AC97 setup. Everything was working fine until I emerge updated my system (a couple of months out of date) and went from kernel 2.6.10 to 2.6.15. I tried built-in ALSA, external ALSA, fall back to other kernels, etc, to no avail. The various troubleshooting guides weren't helpful for my case, the modules would load, /proc/asound would get populated and find the device, but the ALSA devices would never go in /dev/snd. /etc/modules.d/alsa looked fine, as did /etc/devfsd.conf.

What fixed it for me was going from devfs to udev, and all my problems completely went away.

Hope it helps somebody...

Code:
# cat /dev/random > /dev/dsp

there was noise appeared and when i run mpg321 to play a mp3 file
Code:

Allen mp3 # mpg321 never\ say\ goodbye.mp3

I had the same proble, while upgrading from 2.6.10 to 2.6.15. I hadn't switched to udev yet, so just "emerge udev" actually fixed it for me after a lot of frustration.
