Hello,

I can't mount smb shares. The smbfs module is loaded. A
"mount -t smbfs //remote/share /mnt/smb -o username=foo,password=bar"
produces following error:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on //evil/tmp,
or too many mounted file systems

Well, the manpage suprisingly states, that I need an external smbmount programm. Now, where do I get this if i do not want to install samba? Never needed (or installed) samba just to mount smb shares, so there must be an alternate userspace program. However, google was not my friend this time.

Well I can't answer your question. I too was suprised by this type of error. I was also getting errors indicating that smbfs was not supported by my kernel, even though it was.

I decided to emerge samba and that did fix both my problems. You already mentioned you thought that would fix the problem. I mostly chimed in to say "you're right!" -- I agree with everything you said. Sorry I'm not much help though!

Well, I've compiled samba now, too, and deleted everything I do not need. So I'm left with some codepages and two binaries. Acceptable.

I'm glad you found an "acceptable" solution for yourself. I didn't frett much because I ended up putting Samba to use anyway (for hosting LAN parties.)
