|
|
It was working fine untill suddenly when I log in the computer freezes.
I have xdmcp enabled so I can use X-windows from a remote windows machine to log in.
I can log in remotely and do all kinds of stuff without problems.
Now when I login at the machine, it works ok but a few minutes later it freezes.
I remerged NVidia-kernel to try to fix it but that didn't work.
I'm assuming this has to to with the video card? I'm not sure.
I have via266 chipset (athlon xp)
Geforece 4 mx440 (the cheapest one)
I have AGPGART enabled in the kernel (latest) with the via chipset support.
I haven't changed any settings since it was working fine (only occasionaly emerge -up world). I had followed the setting up desktop instructions when I installed Gentoo about a month ago and it was working perfectly.
The only strange thing I have noticed it that after the NVidia logo (when x started, it took a long time for the login manager to show up (kdm).
Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks. |

Sorry, I should have experimented before posting.
More info:
I normallly use kde.
I just tried logging in locally with xsession, and it doesn't seem to lock up.
So I'm guessing it's not hardware? Is it KDE related? But I can do all the kde stuff remotely why would it lock up locally?
I have installed gnome but that never worked and I never cared since I only wanted to see what gnome was like.
Thanks again. |

Well I fixed it (by searching--I couldn't find it before).
It was the nvidia kernel. I upgraded the nvidia-kernel and -glx to 1.0.4191 and that fixed it (solution from, https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=32808) |

Nope. That didn't fix it.
It was Ok after I changed the nvidial-kernel and nvidia-glx.
I logged in as root. It was fine.
Logged outm logged in as a user and it locked up.
It's very stable if I log in remotely.
I don't know what to do. |

Last post:
I found an old Voodoo5 card. That should be good enough.
I'm giving up on nvidia. I'm surprised noone else had this problem. It seem like a driver issue. |

I don't mean to sit here and talk to myself but I'll post a conclusion.
I put the Voodoo card and I got the same problem.
If I login to KDE as root and type 'emerge sync', it will always freeze.
however it seems I can log in as a normal user now in kde and su and do stuf and it it's ok.
Is there a way to completey wipe out KDE with all the preferences and then emerge it?
I don't know if it's KDE or the hardware. I even remerged kde. I'm ready to throw the whole computer away and start with all new parts... |
