The last couple of days I've been playing with a newish (to me, anyway) window manager called Twindy. You can find it at http://www.niallmoody.com/twindy/.

There are some things about it that I really, really like. There are two primary workplaces on the screen, a larger upper window, where you can load numerous apps and access them by tabs. Then there's a smaller lower window, where you can load a single app at a time, in rotation. The combination is really quite effective.

In my case, I usually keep a console window running down below, since I frequently need access to a good old command line. Sometimes I run midnight commander or emelfm2 in the lower window instead. In the upper window I run whatever apps I want, swapping among them via the tabs.In the upper workspace, the window title bars are removed from the top and put into the tabs, giving you more room to work in the window itself. This helps a lot with Opera and some other apps that tend to get crowded at the top.

There are buttons along the side of the interface to let you load apps in the respective windows. For now, things are configured through a single configuration file, but it's very, very easy to set up; far more intuitive than many other wms. Also, you can embed a menu in a button for access to a larger set of apps (see the included twindyrc_example file for an example of embedded menus).

I don't believe there's a Gentoo ebuild yet, but the program compiled painlessly for me. If you're into window manager and like to see what different sorts of approaches there are to organizing workspaces, this is definitely worth a look.

It looks funny, i will surely try it when there is an ebuild. I don't think it will be effective as a desktop but it can be useful for some kiosk environnement.

I hadn't thought about it before, but it does look something like a kiosk interface. Surprisingly, though, it makes for a really efficient desktop, especially if you like to have sort of a "static" work area (for a console, for example, or a filemanager) at the same time as a more dynamic one, where you can load as many apps as you like and move easily among them. The design imposes just enough structure to keep me from spreading myself too thin, as I often do when I load multiple apps into multiple workspaces.

Yeah, I've gotta try ratpoison one of these days, if only 'cause I like the name so much. I didn't realize you could do a split mode; maybe I'll see how I like living without a rodent again.
