Hello

First of all: I'm a Linux noob. I know Gentoo from my XBOX which is running Gentoox.
My Gentoo knowledge is limited too. At least a read the Gentoo Installing Handbook.

As green as I am, I tried to install the stage3 archive:
http://mirror.switch.ch/ftp/mirror/gentoo/experimental/mips/embedded/stages/stage3-mipsel-uclibc-2005.0.tar.bz2
and
http://mirror.switch.ch/ftp/mirror/gentoo/snapshots/portage-latest.tar.bz2
on my brand new Linkstation 2

I managed to chroot into the downloaded and untared gentoo enviroment, but stucked at the point, where I got
the following answer, when I was emerging xyz:
Quote:
your profile is outdated
try to upgrade to mips/uclibc if possible

Did I download the wrong portage tree, or the wrong stage archive?
Do you think it's possible to get Gentoo running on the MIPSel Linkstation 2?
I would be grateful for any hints.

Here some details about the Linkstation 2, taken from http://www.linkstationwiki.org

credits to Markus Geishüttner

Code:
# IDT 79RC32434-400BC Integrated Communications Processor, containing

* 32-bit@400MHz MIPSel CPU core (el ? le ? little endian), with MIPS32 instructions set architecture, based on the MIPS 4Kc core.
* NIC - 10/100Mb
* Serial UART, 16550 compatible. Connected to the AVR microcontroller. There is no second serial port in the ICP, so adding a serial interface for a console is not possible.
* DDR memory controller, can handle up to 256MB
* general purpose memory controller
* PCI controller
* DMA controller
* I2C bus
* general purpose I/O connectors
* JTAG interface (hardware-supported debugging)
* Watchdog timer
* No FPU (floating point is done with a software emulation)

# RAM - 64MB
# Flash ROM - 4MB Macronix MX29LV320T.
# IT8212 PCI IDE disk controller. Note: That controller is actually an IDE RAID 0/1/0+1 controller. It is unclear if this is indeed the disk controller in the MIPSel LinkStation. In case it is, there is maybe some interesting hacking opportunity.
# USB - x2 external. The USB driver reports some more ports (5 EHCI, 3 OHCI, 2 OHCI), it is unknown if they physically exist (pined out on the board) and can be used by adding USB connectors.
# Disks

* LS120: Samsung SP1203N

The Linkstation boots from flash with the following Kernel: Montavista 2.4.20-mipsel-linkstation
It doesn't seem to be possible to boot from the disk.

Stevie.

No, you didn't download the wrong stage... It's just using an old profile.

Try the following:
Code:
# rm /etc/make.profile
# ln -sv /usr/portage/profiles/uclibc/mips/mipsel /etc/make.profile

That should sort things out... and emerge -e system && emerge -u world should get everything nicely up to date.

That's a nice little machine you've got there though. The lack of a floating-point unit is a minor shame and the RAM is limited, but still, a nice machine overall. :-)

As for upgrading the kernel -- good luck. I wouldn't recommend it unless you know what you're doing. The Linux/MIPS website and mailing list would be my first point of contact... the people there should be able to help you. (I'd love to assist, but have no idea when it comes to those sorts of machines.)

I updated my portage tree and got the same message.

In /usr/portage/profiles/uclibc/mips/mipsel (my current profile) there is a deprecation warning advising to go to uclibc/mips instead.
Problem is that if I understand it correctly the only difference would be that I have a mips-gentoo-linux-uclibc CHOST vriable instead of mipsel-gentoo-linux-uclibc. Since I'm running a mipsel system I'm not changing my profile.

Should I file a bug?

Hi again

I now copied the exact message from putty:
Code:
LS / # emerge --sync

!!! Your current profile is deprecated and not supported anymore.
!!! Please upgrade to the following profile if possible:
        uclibc/mips

I ran:
Code:
emerge -e system && emerge -u world

over night but it stopped, cause it could'nt find some url.
Unfortunately I didn't copy these messages.

I'll retry and post the error message.

Stevie.

How did you get on?

Did you give up?

Cheers,
Al

Hi Al
I paused ;-).
I wrote a PM to Ikke. He wrote back, that he succeded installing / updating MIPSEL gentoo
by using emerge-webrsync instead of emerge-sync ( took him 3 1/2 days)

I first installed debian to my Linkstation2 and now switched back to openlink (linkstationwiki.org).
