hi, i've been thinking of trying several avatars, but it seems they were rejected because they dont fit within 80 x 80. Strangely, however, i see a few folks around (beside the admins) that definitely have avatar sizes beyond this.
Not to raise any contentions, but why is this so? |

Avatar's have a 7k size limit if I'm not mistaken. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

yes i am aware - they also have an 80 by 80 limit.
It's an 'and' condition as i've tested (80 x 80 and 7k size limit. Else reject.) |

[edit] sorry: too slow; pointless comment...
I'm sure you're right about your observation
Maybe there's just a size (kb) limit in place instead of a size (pixel*pixel) limit. |

nope. as i've said, both conditions need to apply before any avatar can be accepted. |

When you say, "besides the admins", that says to me that you're claiming the admins have avatars that violate the 80x80/7Kb rule. They don't.
I don't think any of the moderators do, either, though I haven't taken the time to verify that first hand. If you feel that there is a moderator violating the avatar size convention, please feel free to PM one of the admins and we'll address the issue.

Because phpBB isn't 100% about checking these things and it could use some improving. We (mods and admins) do contact those with the most egregious violations and ask them to reduce the size of their avatar. Again, if you notice something that you feel is inappropriate, feel free to PM one of the admins and we will address it. (We won't, however, go after every single person who has an 81x80 or 7.1Kb avatar -- we just don't have the time/resources for that.)

I think he was just saying that if they really wanted to, admins would be able to manually get around the limit, but he has seen other people get around it as well. I don't think he was trying to imply anything about the moderators.

well, not exactly, actually. My point was that
a) admins can get around that (thanks echeslack for speaking for me)
b) they should be reasonable enough not to do anything ridiculous, so that's not a concern for me.
having said that, i must say that those 'violations' that i've seen so far come from avatars within the gallery, so that was a misunderstanding there. If i do however notice any violations, i will be sure to inform the admins as you suggest. |

If there are avatars in the gallery that are bigger than the allotted sizes, we've likely made a conscious decision to allow those on an exception basis. There are a lot of avatars in there, however, so we may have overlooked one that's drastically bigger than the 80x80/7Kb convetion. If you see one, let us know.

Just as a general comment so folks understand what we look for in avatar sizes; avatars that are too large, pixel-wise, can often cause formatting problems for forum pages, especially for users browsing at lower resoutions. avatars that are too large, size-wise, obviously increase download times for users on slower connections.
So, if you have an avatar that doesn't strictly fit within the 80x80/7Kb guidelines, but doesn't really cause one of the above two problems, we'll probably leave you alone. If you have a 200x200 icon that's 25Kb, however, we'll probably be contacting you shortly.
The guidelines are there to protect our userbase as a whole, not just because we like making up rules.

If i do however notice any violations, i will be sure to inform the admins as you suggest. | Yeah, I've actually tapped some people on the shoulder about their avatar only to find that it's actually in the gallery. We've talked about sorting through the gallery and removing the offending avatars, but no one here is quite that bored yet. Mostly, we're just trying to use common sense.
In fact we recently, (very recently) updated the guidlines point number 14 to reflect more common sense. The former rules were that your avatar had to be no more than 7K and that your images in your signature also had to be no more than 7K. The New and Improved (tm) rules are that your avatar and signature images can be no more than 14K combined. This was due to the large number of people who were using the icons from the Gentoo Icon Set which could not be pared down quite small enough to make the 7K limit. There are some expensive transparency techniques used in those *.png files that apparently can't be duplicated with a lossier image format. We're much more concerned about someone's 120x170 avatar than someone's 80x80 by 10K avatar. This is because of the formatting issues that klieber mentioned, which are mostly just common sense. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

thanks for the clarification, as well as the pointer to the icon set. Having said that, can the icon set be found anywhere in the gallery. I couldnt find it, so i tried saving an image to disk and then using "browse" to change my avatar. Unfortunately, i still seem to get a 7k problem. It's still not technically (well, almost) possible to upload anything that goes beyond the 80x80 or 7k limits. |

No, but you can link to it and place the file on an external server.
