For those of you who is interesting (but new) in Zope, thinking to migrate to Zope, but having some doubts about its performance, here are the link to benchmarks published on ZopeZen by Zopista.
The best online content management environment for the price of performance, which is just "slighty "slower than java-based feature-worse (or feature stripped) servers - sounds great to me.
I wonder, why Gentoo community, very Python oriented (comparing to other Linux communities), still don't use Zope for hosting its own web site! |

maybe because speed isn't everything ? (installing this phpbb the forum runs with is *very* easy
but anyway, the benchmarks are an interesting read. I once read some very interesting article about development/application speed of various languages, where java failed in the development speed quite miserably |

Installing of phpbb doesn't work out of the box on gentoo. here is the short list of problems to fix manually: don't use java (USE="-java"); decide what to do with IMAP (either install wu-imap, which you don't need or abandon IMAP in PHP by USE="-imap"); "<ifdefine>" construct doesnt't work in Gentoo's Apache, so remove it, otherwise php doesn't start... Is it easy?
Now, let's compare it with squishdot installation:
install zope, set the admin passwd, start it, install squishdot, login, configure (as you like) and use it. Is it difficult?
Now, after you've got both phpbb and squishdot installed, try to make changes in both. Try to undo your changes. Try to remember your changes. Finally, try to integrate with other same-language-based applications (php or zope). I did it with both php, java and zope based applications. But you'd better try and make conclusions by yourself.

IMHO, Java fails in both run-time speed (especially in a case of a little RAM) and development-time speed (especially with "not formal enough" specs). The only motivation Java involves is based on purely on a hype factor: it's either corporate based decision done by non-technical managers or the person's one who keeps choosing java for the projects thinking to keep "java" keyword in the resume.
Sorry for the flame - could not resist. |
