Erm.. lost my copy of make.conf through a stupid mistake. any clues on how to get a new copy of the thing? It was just default, with a custom use flag and set to Pentium III.

nope. Same as emerge portage, it dosn't update the make.conf, just keeps my current one (a one line pointless thing i had to create for it to run)

Find the latest portage-2.0.*.tar.bz2 in /usr/portage/distfiles and untar make.conf from the package. I haven't tried this, but it's gotta be in there somewhere. Of course you still have to make the manual changes you had before.

Sorry to play the newb a lil much, but
eGore911:Don't see what that'd do, but it also says it's got nothing to do for emerge -u system
GuidoJ: Sounds great, what command would i use to untar it from the command line? I thought i had it worked out with the man file, but it dosn't seem to work (moreover seems to freeze tar or something.. i dunno)

To untar a .tar.bz2 file from the command line, type this:
tar xjvf blah.tar.bz2 _________________ I bent my wookie. |

Use 'emerge portage'
That will remake make.conf _________________ [img:2b429e5a71]http://dessimat0r.myftp.org/signatures/dess1.jpg[/img:2b429e5a71] |

It won't "remake" it exactly, because of config-protect, however you should end up with a file like .cfg0000_make.conf after you finish doing "emerge portage". |

Emerge portage *dosn't* remake it, Hence there is no additional file with config-protect. and etc-update has nothing to do.
That being said i got the file our fo the .tar.bz2, thanks very much for all the help!
