Hi guys,

I installed Gentoo 2005.0 using universal CD and most of packages(like gcc,gnome) from GRPs. Though i have done "emerge --rsync", i haven't done any gcc upgrade or something. So first time after installation, i am trying to do:
Code:

emerge -uDN world

But the update fails, while trying to compile gproff.
Code:
tmp/portage/groff-1.19.1-r2/work/groff-1.19.1/src/preproc/refer /var/tmp/portage/groff-1.19.1-r2/work/groff-1.19.1/src/preproc/soelim /var/tmp/portage/groff-1.19.1-r2/work/groff-1.19.1/src/preproc/html /var/tmp/portage/groff-1.19.1-r2/work/groff-1.19.1/src/devices/grops /var/tmp/portage/groff-1.19.1-r2/work/groff-1.19.1/src/devices/grohtml | sed -e 's|  *|:|g'`; export GROFF_BIN_PATH; sed -e "s;@VERSION@;1.19.1;" pic.ms | /var/tmp/portage/groff-1.19.1-r2/work/groff-1.19.1/src/roff/groff/groff -M/var/tmp/portage/groff-1.19.1-r2/work/groff-1.19.1/tmac -M/var/tmp/portage/groff-1.19.1-r2/work/groff-1.19.1/tmac -F/var/tmp/portage/groff-1.19.1-r2/work/groff-1.19.1/font -F/var/tmp/portage/groff-1.19.1-r2/work/groff-1.19.1/font -Upet -ww -Tps -ms -mwww >pic.ps

If it is of any help...here is the contents of /etc/make.conf
Code:

# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically built this stage
# Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example
CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -fforce-addr -frename-registers
-falign-functions=64"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
USE="acpi alsa avi curl dga dvd encode fbcon freetds gb gd gif gtk2 imap \

Also, if it is of any help..the command "emerge -uDN world" actually successfully compiled gcc to the latest version.So the output of "gcc-config -l" command is:
Code:

 [1] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.3.5 *
 [2] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.3.5-hardened
 [3] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.3.5-hardenednopie
 [4] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.3.5-hardenednossp
 [5] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.4
 [6] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.4-hardened
 [7] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.4-hardenednopie
 [8] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.4-hardenednopiessp
 [9] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.4-hardenednossp

Here the defualt(old) compiler installed from GRPs is : 3.3.5.
Please respond with any help as soon as possible. I have tried "fix_libtool_files.sh 3.3.5 --oldarch i386-pc-linux-gnu".
I have also tried the symbolic link: so i do have a symbolic link i386-pc-linux-gnu in "/usr/lib/gcc-lib" that points to i686-xxxx

Did you change your CHOST variable in make.conf?

I would suggest to run gcc-config 1, then env-update, then source /etc/profile, try your emerge again. If it still can't find gcc, check your gcc environment files in /etc/env.d, should be something along the lines of 05gcc-something-or-another, and the files in /etc/env.d/gcc. Verify they all actually point to correct paths. If they are incorrect, fix them, run your env-update, source /etc/profile, try again... I have ran into this problem before, the files environment files that should have been configured correctly by gcc-config were all dorked up...

Dont know if this might help you guys solve it, but this caughted my atention:
Code:

gcc-config error: Could not run/locate "i386-pc-linux-gnu-gcc"

I am guessing there is something wrong there(not sure though).
The following link has relevant information:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-318581-start-0-postdays-0-postorder-asc-highlight-gccconfig+error+locate+i386pclinuxgnugcc.html

Good luck,
