When I ran emerge -pu --deep -N world today I found that the eselect package for php5 is replaced
by php-toolkit.
Why is this the case? Are there any other changes I should be aware of? Or is this an portage-error?

Quote:
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] app-admin/eselect-php (is blocking app-admin/php-toolkit-1.0)
[ebuild N ] app-admin/php-toolkit-1.0
[ebuild U ] dev-lang/php-5.1.1 [5.0.5-r4]

Thanks for the link. Is there any reason why the devs changed the programs?

http://chtekk.longitekk.com/?p=3 explains a little the concept behind it, and the reason why we moved to do our own php-toolkit instead of using eselect (and thus eselect-php) can be found in Bugzilla: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=116975#c3 (comment #3).

But if eselect-php is going to be removed from the tree, will this break older builds of php?

i would not think so since it appears to me that all it does is creating some symlinks to set
the version of php your are using. It should not interfere with anything therefore.
Anyone, please correct me if I am wrong :-)

Yup, functionality-wise it does exactly the same as eselect-php, just not using eselect. :) So tha will not break anything. Also, the moment we added the new ebuilds (new -rX's) of dev-lang/php to the tree that depended on php-toolkit, the old ones that depended on eselect-php were deleted, so atm there is no ebuild in the Portage tree that does depend or use eselect-php in any way, so we can safely remove it in a few days. :)
