I accidentilly unmerged binutils, thinking it was a rarely used library. Little did I know that I need it to compile programs. So now I'm in a predicament of not knowing how to reinstall binutils. I've tried emerging binutils, I've tried compiling it on another machine and then 'make install'ng it on the troubled box.

I need some way to have the [binutils] binaries pre-compiled and just copy them into the respective folders using the 'cp' command. I don't have RPM support installed, so I don't know what to try next. :!: I need help :!: , or else I'm going to have to ftp my /etc dir to another box and re-build the system.

Code:
emerge -b binutils
or
Code:
ebuild /usr/portage/sys-devel/binutils/binutils-2.12.90.0.7.ebuild package

This will compile the file and stores it as a tbz2 package in /usr/portage/packages/All. This way you can cp it to your computer and just do a emerge -k I think or just untar the package in root and rebuild binutils afterwards.

Hello,

I know that this topic is very old but I would like to refresh it as I have the same problem. I also by mistake unmerged binutils because I thought it resolve other problem with preserved libraries. I tried commands:
Code:
emerge -b binutils
ebuild /usr/portage/sys-devel/binutils/binutils-2.12.90.0.7.ebuild package

But each time I received this output:
Code:
checking for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc... x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name...
configure: error: in `/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/binutils-2.26.1/work/build':

Also I include output of emerge -pqv:
Code:
# emerge -pqv '=sys-devel/binutils-2.26.1::gentoo'
[ebuild  N    ] sys-devel/binutils-2.26.1  USE="cxx nls -multitarget -static-libs {-test} -vanilla"

So I stuck and to be honest I don't know how to fix system. And I don't want to format and install again, it's not a solution. I read somewhere on stackoverflow that I should find tbz2 package of binutils and installed it but I'm afraid of breaking system even more.
Thank you for any help!

truthseaker,

The backstop is Fix My Gentoo
Read it anyway - you will need some of the steps.

You can get binary packages and emerge them.
Pick a binary that matches your install.

If you are lazy, you can set BINHOST in make.conf then emerge -K will use the BINHOST directly.
Remove the BINHOST setting when your system works again.

Thank you very much for answers. Solution from fedeliallalinea fixed everything! :) I'm asking moderator for marking this thread as solved because I'm not author and starting to read Fix My Gentoo article in order to increase my knowledge.

I think this is a record for thread necromancy.

lx meant for you to run those on your still-functional alternate system, where it would generate the package that you would install on the broken system. You cannot use a broken system to fix itself, because if you could, it would not be a broken system.
