During read/write operations, especially ones that are deleting large files from the disk, the system nearly locks up and has load times going up to nearly 10 and sometimes above 10.

I tried capturing the load, but it was nearly impossible due to the lag up.

Discovered this in dmesg output, oddly I never thought of looking there.
Code:

ReiserFS: sda1: found reiserfs format "3.6" with standard journal
ReiserFS: sda1: warning: CONFIG_REISERFS_CHECK is set ON
ReiserFS: sda1: warning: - it is slow mode for debugging.
ReiserFS: sda1: using ordered data mode
ReiserFS: sda1: journal params: device sda1, size 8192, journal first block 18, max trans len 1024, max batch 900, max commit age 30,max trans age 30
ReiserFS: sda1: checking transaction log (sda1)
ReiserFS: sda1: journal-1153: found in header: first_unflushed_offset 4033, last_flushed_trans_id 720065
ReiserFS: sda1: journal-1006: found valid transaction start offset 4033, len 10 id 719292
ReiserFS: sda1: journal-1206: Starting replay from offset 3092659920965569, trans_id 1
ReiserFS: sda1: journal-1037: journal_read_transaction, offset 4033, len 10 mount_id 654
ReiserFS: sda1: journal-1039: journal_read_trans skipping because 4033 is too old
ReiserFS: sda1: journal-1299: Setting newest_mount_id to 663
ReiserFS: sda1: Using r5 hash to sort names

Could CONFIG_RESIERFS_CHECK be causing my issues? My disk/array works fine under earlier kernels.

Edit: Reiserfs debug was on in the kernel. Make sure you dont make stupid mistakes like I did!

It's definitely that. Never enable debug mode on anything unless you actually intend to debug it :).

Jesus, I dont even know how I enabled that. How would I go about disabling it?

could b debug mode..

I assume SDA1 is an external drive? Could b slow transfer rate.. I don't know 2 much about this.

Maybe setting up hdparm to optimise read/write will work?

Would you like to share how the program is called captured on your screenshot? I recognise it,
but I forgot.. Does it only work on gnome? Since I'm using KDE.

Edit: debug mode is set in kernel I think. Try checking it out under filesystems

Its an internal 4 disk 7200rpm SATA array, so its not due to slow transfer rate.

I'm using two different programs there, gkrellm2 (in portage) and conky. The part with the colored graphs is gkrellm2 with the 'invisible' skin. Conky is with the blue text, I have it configured so it goes around and matches with gkrellm2. Both programs are in portage.

You will need to recompile the kernel. Make sure that Reiserfs debug mode is not enabled (File systems -> ReiserFS -> ReiserFS debugging should be UNCHECKED).

Yep, just checked that after the previous post, and sure enough it was enabled. I'm wondering if I accidentally enabled it during one of my kernel upgrades and didnt even notice it. Gotta be more careful! 8O
