'system' is the basic system only...
as for use flags - they are there to modify packages u install...
example: there are some parts of kde that can be compiled with mysql support - if u install kde and u have mysql enabled support for it is compiled into the binaries... if u want to exclude some things that u dont need just set them to '-something' and it will be left out - '-java' will prevent 'emerge gcc' from compiling a java compiler... _________________ To an engineer the glass is neither half full, nor half empty - it is just twice as big as it needs to be. |

Ok then if thats the case , being as if USE flags are only used for vai\riation and what not for your system, if i wanted to install kde basically all i would do is say emerge kde correct?
also one more ?, does X come automatically installed when you emerge system and rebuild yoru kernel using make menuconfig? or do you have to instlal X seperatly using emerge xfree? |

You will have to emerge xfree seperatly because its not part of the emerge system. |

kde? correct.
...but as i can remeber, emerge kde doesn't look for xfree if it is installed, so you have to emerge xfree separatly
those USE flags are actually used in hte same way you would use them to compile source on your own:
example:
if you hav USE="-gnome -gtk +qt +kde"
when you emerge xmms (or whatever)
it'll act the same way as if you would use:
./configure
make --without-gnome --without-gtg --with-qt --with-kde _________________ tea+free software+law=hook
