|
|
The very first thing that happened is : unable to start X server (nvidia), black screen and all freezes. All worked fine during weeks and I didn't change anything to my config or whatever...
When I rebooted (ugly rude manual reset of course...) :
During init process, it says it can't remove files, etc...
I can't even read files in /var/lib/init.d/ : interactive, softscripts, snapshot, options, started, starting, inactive, stopping, exclusive and exitcodes.
When I try ls-ing this directory it says : input/output error at boot time and shutdown time.
Ok, the file system is corrupted due to the manual reset...I tried to fix it with a "fsck", ok, that worked fine but I still can't start the X server though, and , of course, no KDE...Back to Windows, duh !!!
I didn't change anything or install anything, the disks aren't full...
Any clue about this ? |

There could be millions of different reasons for the initial hang. But seems that your problem is now another one. Look into /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see if you can find some info on what is preventing X to start. |

No problem in Xorg.0.log (no line starting with EE). It looks sane.
But I guess my problem appears BEFORE starting X server and has nothing to do with it (but prevent it from working correctly though)
The first errors I can see logged on screen appear just after kernel boot (gentoo init with lots of green OK) :
/sbin/rc : could not create needed directory /var/lib/init.d/softscript (and a few others in same directory)
ln : accessing /var/lib/init.d/started/checkroot
(my comment : same goes for with files with same name but in other subdirectories of /var/lib/init.d/)
rm : cannot remove /var/lib/init.d/started/checkroot
/hostname
(my comment : same goes for with files with same name but in other subdirectories of /var/lib/init.d/)
Possible "rootkit" or similar crap ? (several servers are running and may be not securely set up, like ssh for example...)
I saw on a web site that this init process could have vulnerabilities. Am I wrong ? |

My advice then is to disable xdm (rc-update del xdm) and boot from command line. Then check if you can operate normally. If it is the case check that those directories are there and if not recreate them (sometimes services like sysklogd and udev fail to run adequatelly if the dirs are not there). Check permissions too, of course.
It could also be a rootkit, but I would try the simpler solutions first. If you are afraid about security disable all the network services untill you dig on the problem. |

I did that already before posting this thread. All works except 2 servers that don't start : MySQL and VMWare.
Apparently, all files are recreated inside recreated directories after first reboot. I had to delete /var/run/apache2.pid to make it start (input/output error when ls-ing that file). I didn't have to delete /var/run/sshd.pid (sshd starts even if there is an output/output error when ls-ing..., I deleted it anyway)
Like I said, I did that already and soon as I start X server (startx command), the problem is back like I did nothing... |

I tried to take a look at /root/.xsession-errors : it's huuuuge, 186640085 bytes in size...
I can only see the first lines, I have to kill the process (less) with another opened session to get back to the command line... |

I've deleted /root/.xsession-errors and /root/.xsession-errors~.
I've started X server (startx, black screen, freezes ?, maybe I should wait a bit to see the windowing system to appear ?). No .xsession-errors created, only .xsession-errors~.
I've resetted my PC : no error during boot (except MySQL and VMWare, as usual...)
Here is my /root/.xsession-errors~
