I have this running great on a 2.4.x kernel, but will it patch a 2.5.x kernel correctly?

Hi,

I must be doing something wrong 'cause I can't get it to boot in silent mode :cry:

My grub.conf:
Code:

kernel = /boot/bzImage-2.4.20-gaming-r1 vga=0x317 root=/dev/hda3 video=mtrr,vesa:1024x768 splash=silent
initrd = /boot/initrd-1024x768

And here's a snip from dmesg:
Code:

vesafb: framebuffer at 0xd8000000, mapped to 0xd0813000, size 16384k
vesafb: mode is 1280x1024x16, linelength=2560, pages=5
vesafb: protected mode interface info at c000:831b
vesafb: scrolling: redraw
vesafb: directcolor: size=0:5:6:5, shift=0:11:5:0
Looking for splash picture.... silenjpeg size 75071 bytes, found (1280x1024, 26385 bytes, v3).
Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 153x54
fb0: VESA VGA frame buffer device

And my kernel:

Code:

Linux version 2.4.20-gaming-r1 (root@elabon.shadowsun.com.ar) (gcc version 3.2.2) #4 Thu Apr 17 23:38:25 ART 2003

My video card is a 3dfx Voodoo3 3000 and I've also instaled bootsplash-0.5.ebuild.

It always boots in verbose mode. Any ideas??

TIA

Does this method work the same with gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r2?

the thing is HOW to update it, this is what i'm currently trying to solve. since gentoo doesn't use a standard rc system it has made this VERY difficult to say the least. i would like the progressbar to update on every [ OK ] but i have no clue how to do that at the moment... if anyone know a solution, please post it!

I think you want to add your code to the eend() function defined in /etc/init.d/functions.sh

Gentoo makes it easier IMO :)

[random rant] THE SHIT BROKE MY PC!!! [/random rant]

i did what the ebuild wanted me to do, but when i rebooted and got through grub, all i got was a blank screen.

i rebooted with my old gentoo live-cd, chrooted my / back, mounted /boot, removed the lines that were added in order for bootsplash to "work" - it didn't work still

then i ran rc-update del bootsplash and now i can use my linux box as i should.

but i want to have bootsplash. what did i do wrong!?!

For anyone that is still getting the initrd not found message, try this:

Code:

initrd (hd1,4)/initrd

The part in parenthesis should be the same as for your kernel. I tried everything suggested in the forums, but this was the only way I could get it to find the initrd.

Did you check to make sure /boot/initrd exists?

bluish window overlay...
I grabbed some sweet bootsplash screens and fired them up but when I expected (in the fellowship one I was using) to see the boot text appear in the whiteish colour window the jpg seemed to be overlayed with a semi-transparent bluish box which was a bit bigger (couple of centimeters on each side) than the whiteish box. And the boot text is constrained in that box not the box on the jpg. Is this normal or have I done something wrong. I'm using vga = 791, but I also tried 792 and 794 (but in both cases I just got tux and no splash). Am I doing something wrong?

Cheers.

You need to edit the config file when you change the jpeg. All that info, the color tint and the box the text fits can be changed there.

Hmm. I've tried changing the number of bgcolour to a few values (0,9,12) and new console with a splash each time and there appears to be no change. Am I being retarded?

Cheers.

It depends on how you are using the config file. In order to change the configuration that the machine wakes up in you need to redo:
Code:
splash -s -f config.file > /boot/initrd

If you want to see changes instantly you can run:
Code:
splash -s -u N config.file

where N is in 1 -- 5 (the tty number)

You can get complete instructions at the Boot Splash web site.

Thanks Jimbow, with a bit of fiddling that's done the trick.
Cheers.

hi, my current boot splash looks like this http://dhruba.codewordt.co.uk/images/fb.png
the default one. i was wondering how to get rid of the dark block that the text is in and just have the text on the background without teh border or anything

sortof like this one

http://mitglied.lycos.de/mojothemad/luis_royo_bootsplash.jpg

it just has the text alone, which what i want to do. i played around with the cfg file, i know how to resize where the text goes, but i cant get rid of the dark block. thx

edit the bootsplash.cfg file and then reapply it. the box command is the useful bit. commenting out the box lines will remove the box

I also get the same problem with grub. It says /boot/initrd cannot be found. Here's my grub.conf:

default 0
timeout 30
splashimage=(hd0,1)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title=Gentoo Linux
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/bzImage root=/dev/hda4 vga=791 video=vesa:1024:768@70 hdc=ide-scsi
initrd=/boot/initrd

title=Windows XP
root (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

I had /boot mounted when I made the initrd file, and it is automounted on boot.

Thanks

Try taking out the /boot in the /boot/initrd
