None of the programs seem to be able to open them, and there doesn't seem to be a USE flag to enable it.
Do I need a special program of plugin?

For example to view the example images at http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/index.html

I had no problem viewing this http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/dslr/canon_eos_350d/samples/IMG_0402-01.jpg image in Firefox.

Code:
/home/bubba $ emerge -pv mozilla-firefox

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild   R   ] www-client/mozilla-firefox-1.0.7-r2  -debug -gnome -ipv6 -java -mozcalendar -mozdevelop -moznoxft +mozsvg +truetype -xinerama -xprint 32,231 kB

Although they aren't listed as used by Firefox, I also have jp2 and jpeg2k USE flags enabled.

Please post a link to one of the images you are unable to view so that others can try to verify the problem.

That was a standard JPEG, but try these for example: http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/tamron_2875_28/index.htm

There are no such USE flags according to http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/use-index.xml

You are quite right about the jpeg2000 format. Nothing I have will display it.

Those are valid USE flags. Look in /usr/portage/profiles/use.* files for the real flags that are available on your system.

Code:
/home/bubba $ grep jp2 /usr/portage/profiles/use.*
/usr/portage/profiles/use.local.desc:media-gfx/graphicsmagick:jp2 - enable jpeg v2 support
/home/bubba $ grep jpeg2k /usr/portage/profiles/use.*
/usr/portage/profiles/use.local.desc:app-text/ghostscript-afpl:jasper - Enable support for jpeg2k (jasper)
/usr/portage/profiles/use.local.desc:kde-base/kdegraphics:jpeg2k - Enable support for jpeg2k (jasper)
/usr/portage/profiles/use.local.desc:kde-base/kdelibs:jpeg2k - Enable support for jpeg2k (jasper)
/usr/portage/profiles/use.local.desc:net-proxy/ziproxy:jpeg2k - Enable support for jpeg2k (jasper)

Since kdegraphics uses the jpeg2k USE flag, there must be a kde program that can handle them. I have no idea which one though. Sounds like it is time for a Google search...

I have now re-emerged/updated kdegraphics with the two USE-flags set, but still nothing will open them. Neither Kview nor Kuickshow.

FWIW, jpeg2000 { j2p } images can be opened with KolourPaint.

However, it takes a loooong time to open.

The j2p images being posted by the HiRise project; such as on this page: http://hiroc.lpl.arizona.edu/images/PSP/PSP_001349_1310/ can vary from 18 megs to over 1 gig. If you think you have a really 'hot' PC, I dare you to try opening the larger images. See what the largest one you can open is.

GIMP, Kwickshow, Kview and Krita all seem to _not_ have support yet for j2p. Does anyone know any other available packages in Linux which will open j2p?

Also, there appears to be a netscape plugin available which is supposed to work with ff, flock, moz etc. See here: http://scilincdev.blogspot.com/2006/12/viewing-jpeg2000-images-in-linux.html {dated Dec 7, 2006} and here: http://linuxj2k.org/

I'm not certain how to try it out on my Gentoo box so I haven't tried it. If someone wants to give pointers or perhaps try their hand a custom ebuild, it would be appreciated.

EDIT - Kview _does_ open j2p files. It just takes forever.
