Here are instructions on how I partitioned the laptop hard disk on my Toshiba Laptop 1805-S724 to install linux on the 2nd partition.

Making a Dual boot system (XP and Linux)

Installing XP stuff on a smaller partition

I performed the following steps to install XP on an 8GB partition (from a total size of 20GB):

1. Using, a Linux bootable CD, from any distro, create a partition of the size you want. Set type to 'c' - Win95 Fat32 (LBA). Make sure that the XP partition is the first primary partition.
2. Boot using the 1st CD supplied with the computer
3. Press F2 (cancel) at proceed screen
4. You come at the command prompt (A:). The boot process on the CD, assigns "Q:" as the CD drive.
5. Use the following commands:

Code:
      q:
      format c:
      fdisk /mbr
      \bin\cenv.bat
      cd \base      <<<---- important step don't ignore
      os.bat

6. The above commands will start loading the OS images contained in the 3 CDs into the 1st partition of the 1st hard disk.
7. Now, you are all set to install Linux :)

Lilo and boot record

Write lilo to MBR. Initially, I tried to write lilo to the Linux partition's 1st sector, and activated the Linux partition, I got the lilo boot menu ok. If XP is selected from the boot menu, it re-sets to boot from the XP partition, so on next reboot, lilo prompt does not come.

The BIOS is capable of booting beyond the 1st 1024 cylinders.

After this, Linux install went smooth.
