As I am very new to Linux myself, I thought I'd share some info on where I found some great info for getting started with the OS.

I have been playing around with PCs since the early nineties, but mostly with MS operating systems of all kinds. I had a short run with OS/2, but like I said, it was short. Anyway, I consider myself to be a quite accomplished computer user, I know my way around all MS operating systems very well and I write some scripts from time to time, write php, I am a helluva excel user etc...

So, when I decided to have a look at Linux I became very frustrated. I wanted do things but I just did not know how! However, I looked at the Gentoo installation guide and thought that with such an extensive manual, I ought to learn something. And I did. What I coundn't figure out from the manual, I mostly found in the forums. So, after I while I had this sense that I knew roughly what I was doing but at the same time I felt like I knew nothing. So I found a couple of pages that explain the shell commands very well. (I really feel that the right way to go is to learn the shell before even installing a GUI; I know a lot of MS Windows users who have no idea what DOS commands are and they simply do not have the understanding of how things work...).

So, to be brief, I just wanted to put some links here that have helped me a lot, and I hope that they can help other beginners as well. The links are:
http://www.linuxcommand.org/ - A great tutorial of the Linux shell.
http://www.mediacollege.com/linux/command/ - Listings of commands and a brief description of what they do.
http://www.ss64.com/bash/ - An A-Z Index of the Linux BASH command line
----Links to gentoo.org----
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml - The Gentoo Handbook
https://forums.gentoo.org/ - and, of course, the Gentoo forums! (if you're reading this I suppose you've already found them, but I just wanted a link to them as I've gotten tons of info from there)

Happy linuxing.

Ah ... just what i needed.... thanks for the link to linuxcommand.org. I've been trying to learn BASH scripting for the past 2 days and this looks like a good resource. :)
