Since upgrading to kde 3.5 I have no sound except the kde sounds. A friend of mine suggested that arts is hogging all the sound and not letting other programs use it. I'm not sure how to fix this or if this is a bug in KDE. Any suggestions?
Thanks! |

Hi,
I had the similar problem. After upgrade to KDE 3.5 (yesterday) I had KDE sounds but amarok was not able to play OGG vorbis files (mp3 was playing). But if I tried to play OGG vorbis using ogg123 then there was no problem. I found out that in KDE 3.5 there in no akode ebuild I had for KDE 3.4. But there is a new ebuild artsplugin-akode. So after unmerging of akode and merging of artsplugin-akode everything works fine
Regards

And did you try to logout from KDE?
You can change you player for knotify easily by Control Center -> Sound & Multimedia -> System notification (I don't know the name exactly as I don't have english KDE) -> there is a button at the bottom like "Change player". You can change the player in the dialog. |

I think you can easily disable arts in control center -> Sound and multimedia -> Sound system -> disable.
But to be honest I'm not sure if KDE sound apps will work.
The better way I think is to find where is a problem. |

Go to the control center in kde. Then go into sound and multimedia -> sound system. Uncheck enable sound system.
Arts will then not run unless a program specifically needs it (like kaboodle). Then you can go to system notifications and then click player settings. You can choose an external player like sox or alsaplayer or something. |

Not sure if this will help, but I was having all types of problems with arts when I went from 3.4 to 3.5. Even after rebuilding arts, amarok would complain it could not start arts ( even with a "amarok --engine arts" ). And if I tried to restart the Sound System in the control panel, it would count up to 100%, then start over.
I noticed when things were being build, that "gcc" was including the path to 3.4 for libraries and such. So I move "/usr/kde/3.4" to "/usr/kde/3.4.back" and rebuilt arts, kde-base, and kde-libs. After that arts works perfectly.
I don't know if I need to re-build all three, arts may have been all that was needed. _________________ supun |

well I elimated arts as the problem by removing arts and remerging kdemultimedia with an -arts use flag. Still no sound when playing cds. Only on apps like gaim and xchat. Any other suggestions? A friend said it could be a problem with onboard sound and that I need to go to a soundcard. |

Not sure, but I'm having a similar problem after upgrading to 3.5 with the new kde libs. I haven't tried re-emerging amarok though, so I'm not sure if that will help.
I get the standard KDE sounds, but amaroK complains about something else (on windows now or I would look at the error again) and says I should run some command prompts and other things. I haven't re-emerged arts, but I did recompile alsa because of the upgrade to 2.6.14.
I am running an nforce2 chipset (Asus A7N8X MB), and this one of my two remaining problems after upgrading. The other is a probably unrelated X shutdown issue.

Well... I also have humongous problems with arts after upgrading to 3.5
I discovered that I have two versions of KDE in my system , because of having two versions of arts made the system a little confused.
I believe that it is because I have not unmasked kwin in my packages.keyword file.
When unmerging arts-3.4.3 the xmms got happy, but amarok still complains.
Crap, I have to clean up the system now, and I do not really know how to do it
edit:
Well, after unmerging amarok and reemerging it back did it. But isn't there a more convenient solution than to unmerge ALL remaining 3.4.*-packages end reemerge them in order to get them back to 3.5 ??? _________________ Gentoo-n00b |

Code: | equery l arts
emerge -aC =arts-1* |
It's just an example, replace the arts version with the one you have to get rid of. |

Hi,
If you can't play ogg and mp3 file with artsplay you can emerge the new version of Akode 2.0 RC1.
I hope it will solve your problem. By me on kde 3.5 final it worked !
Bye... |
