|
|
Hello, ok with games support on linux getting better (yes know it is debatable) i feel there is a need for a games dir so instead of usergame data being installed to
it would go into
Code: |
/home/user/games/.quake4
|
Why you ask? simple it makes managing what can be very big dir, maps saved games, easier especially for backing up, creating file systems raid setup that help with loading of games.
Personally i would like to put a 'Games' dir on it own raid0 partitions using XFS and have this dir excluded from backup scripts as it not that important, when i used windoze i setup a partition just for games.
This could also be extended for the games install dir /opt/quake4 becoming /opt/games/quake4
The other issue is shared maps, if you play online gaming then you end up downloading lots of new maps which end up in your home dir for what ever game it is, now if you have more than one user you end up with duplicate maps, i am sure that at one time maps got downloaded to the /opt/game/maps dir?
What i am going to do is create games dir in home mv games there and create sym links but this bit of pain everytime i install a game.
Anyone any thoughts on this?

I've done that with Ut2004/2003 (sortof
(my Ut2004 currently 14G
I have a games partition and installed my games to there
(that way I have them where I WANT them to be)
havent thought about the .ut2004
but agree with you
starting to get SICK of all the .something files
need a way to point all the games .file to a .game dir
while we are at it a method to put ALL specific dot files in a specific dir
e.g.
.util and all my dot files into a util dir
.apps and all my dot files into a app dir
Admit I havent worried about it much, but at times its starting to bug me
maybe the ebuilds can ask
'install location"
'dot location'
with enter just being defaults
anyone?
(i DO prefer grouping types together, we do it with the menu's and some directories, about time for the dot files) |

Hello, although my post was about games i do agree with your point on apps ./dir
The one thing i miss from windows is the ability to decide where i want to install files, which when you think about the ability not to is very restrictive. Don't expect this to be done on an ebuild by ebuild basis but as already said the ability to group cetain apps and where they are installed would be nice, especially for games. _________________ Work Station - 64bit

Umm...
Set GAMES_PREFIX_OPT in make.conf...
GAMES_PREFIX_OPT=/opt/games will do exactly as you want. This support has been in all games on Gentoo for at least 2 years. _________________ Ex-Gentoo Developer
