Is there a way (variable in make.conf, environment... or so) to make emerge install Kernel Sources for example in /opt/src?
I am considering to use gentoo on a new Server at my RackSpace Provider and I am used to mount /usr ro ...

This will be difficult, since some packages rely on the kernelsources being available on /usr/src/linux (symlinked to wherever they are).
But you can edit the ebuild of the kernel so that it is installed somewhere else. |

Thats it, they are always symlinked to somewhere else...
I am going to rearrange that and make an extra LVM for /usr/src...

You can always mount /usr ro but have a seperate partition (/usr/src) mounted above it rw... |
