I assume that the openoffice-bin package is precompiled, whereas the openoffice package compiles (as usual) on your machine. Be warned, though, the openoffice compile is probably the largest one in portage. For example, it takes more than 14 hours on my 2.0GHz Celeron machine.

The openoffice-bin package description should probably state that it is a pre-compiled binary, but it doesn't. Bug anyone?
