|
|
This has been happening for a wee while now well, ever since i got the machine. Every time i try to browse to net or do an emerge --sync, it starts and then just gives up. I used to get it in links2 when installing gentoo...i would go to the mirror site and it would just sit saying "Request Sent". It's now happening in Konqueror...sits waiting for a reply.
Strange thing is, it works fine with a couple of sites. www.bbc.co.uk works fine, www.blueyonder.co.uk works fine and google half works - it doesn't load the images. When i do an emerge --sync, it downloads the file list then does it's thing but then freezes at random points for it's timeout then tries again. I managed to get thru a whole sync once i think. Strange thing is, i can emerge programs easily and browse ftp sites no bother.
My system is a Sun Ultra 5 with the Happy Meal network controller. I even tried an 8139 card but it was worse. Everything is set fpr dhcp with the settings outlined in the install docs. I've tried connecting in various ways...through my router, direct into the modem, through a wireless bridge into my access point and i even took it into work and tried it on their network and exactly them same thing is happening.
All help appreciated

No joy. Ive tried various MTU values and mii-tool doesn't work with the Happy Meal interface:
Code: | SIOCGMIIPHY on 'eth0' failted: Operation Not Supported
no MII interfaces found |
I also tried again with the 8139 card. mii-toolworked fine on it and auto-negotiated to 100baseTX with my cable modem but i still get the same results with various MTU values.
I also just noticed that even though some sites (like bbc.co.uk) work, if you go any deeper than the home page, Konqueror comes up complaining that "Connection to host www.bbc.co.uk is broken". I also tried Firefox to the same end.
I think i'll have a try with the latest kernel. I'm running 2.4.31-r2 and i saw on kernel.org that one of the fixes in x.32 was network related to dropping connections. I'll let you know |

2.4.32 is even worse. Nothng works at all with it. I've also discovered that incoming connections seem most problematic. I cant SSH into the machine and webmin barely loads |

I tried Solaris and it worked fine but Gentoo still refuses to load web pages properly / at all
Also, i saw the X Server was spitting the following out -
DCOPClicent :: attachInternal. Attach failed. Could not open network socket
Error: Could not attach to DCOP server
Any ideas?
Cheers
