I recently emerged the latest version of VNC and found that the server was missing. The forums here were great in finding out that the functionality had changed, so I quickly got the server to compile, but now I have a different problem.

I only use VNC over SSH and have my box locked down so it will refuse all other connections. I'll normally start VNC shortly after my box is rebooted and it will stay up for months, after the most recent update, I found that when I disconnect my VNC session that the server dies, so I can't start jobs remotely and get back to them later. Once I lauch VNC it stays up until I connect and disconnect, then it is gone.

I can't find anything obvious that is causing the problem and would appreciate any help anyone has to offer.

Thanks

check your vnc log!
It's located in your home folder in the dir .vnc and post it here.
I experienced problems when connecting with an old client to a new vncserver version.
When disconnecting with the client, the server crashed.

x11vnc shuts down after a user finishes with the session unless you pass it the -forever option.

Which client do u use?
Can I download it somewhere?
I had the same problem a while ago and solved it by updating my client.

I'm using version 4.1.1 of the RealVNC personal client, I haven't made any changes to my client, that I can remember. I just download version 4.1.9 of the RealVNC enterprise client and it gives me the same behaviour.

The only that I can remember changing is updating my system with emerge world, which included an update to vnc. I'll try to step back a version and see if that helps or the problem continues.

Note:
I just emerged net-misc/vnc-3.3.7 and the problem has gone away. My vnc session remains up no matter how many times I connect and disconnect. Something is amiss in 4.0-r1, at least in my setup.

if you're using kde, there is a builtin vnc-like thingy. its in the kontrol panel under "internet & network" or "kde components" (i can't remember which, i'm not at my pc)
