|

Hi!
I have been asked to find a solution for a problem. The problem is three alarm devices that today registers every event by printing to three seperate serial printers. The solution would be to connect the alarm devices to a linuxbox and to read from the serial tty and send all data to a logfile. I have to my help an electrician and we have read alot of instructions on how to connect which cables on which connectors on the serial cables to get wanted effect with no luck. I have tried to connect a serial mouse to the serial port and then cat the device ttyS0 and that works beutifully but when we turn the alarm on and off and it's connected to the computer it's totally silent, but when it's connected to the printer it prints the event. I assume that it is standard serial printers. I need to know how to connect the cables for the computer to understand the input and I need to know if I need any specific driver modules for this to work.
I appreciate any help or insight I might get.

It depends on connectors and settings on the printer and computer side. Of course they've to match. Supposing that cabling is correct you've probably to play with stty to set (at least) correct baudrate, data bits, parity and flow control settings. _________________ Adopt an unanswered post

I'm afraid that the only place to look at is the printer documentation. I suppose they're old printers (I don't know of any new printer with serial interface), and probably the communication parameters are set by dip switches. If they're a litlle newer they may have a menu, using the LCD display (if present) or printing the choices on paper. Unless you know the alarms communication settings. _________________ Adopt an unanswered post
