I can chmod /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer to allow nonroot access but after a reboot things are back to their root-only self.
How does one make this permanent

ahhh, yes. I am remembering that /dev/dsp is of the audio group.
how does one manage groups, I can't even think of a command to guess and read the manual for. |
