WHen I once tried to disable ACPI in the kernel, just because I do not want power saving modes and hibernate etc...
nothing worked as it should.
I got an MP-BIOS bug right after grub printed the kernel info it is booting, it boots but then KDE runs slower, wallpaper comes up a minute later instead of instantly and playing mp3 files with ALSA and amaroK hangs the sound.
Hardware: Amd64 athlon 3000+ Asus K8N
so I had to re-enable the acpi in the kernel. Luckily I dont really need to disable it to get other things working, but I would really like to shut it down.
Is there any way I still can do it without breaking things or am I out of luck ? (note, I also tried disabling acpi in combination with enabling APM but that didnt fix those delay and hang problems)
edit: tested with gentoo-sources-2.6.14-r2 _________________ Programming today is a race between Software Engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof Programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots.

you can add acpi=off in your kernel grub line config. You should keep in mind though that ACPI is used for a lot more stuff than just powersaving. It's used to probe PCI devices and get IRQ settings. It's probably used for something else, but that's all I can think of so far.
Have you tried updating your MB bios ?
