This morning at 7:00 am I started an emerge of kde. Well it's now almost 5:00 pm and it's still not done.
Given that I am going to have to break the emerge and stop it in order to get anything done on my computer and was just wondering...
Can I break an emerge like the one for kde and start it again? Such that I don't have to start all over again?
Will breaking an emerge cause the package I was trying to emerge to be left in an unusable state? Such that it might be broken in the middle of compiling an important file?
Any insight on this would be appreciated. I have only one Linux computer and can't afford to tie up the computer for a whole day at a time just to emerge something. I have no idea how long the emerge of kde is going to take but it's certainly taking a lot longer than I expected. I am using a Pentium III 450 MHz with 512 MB Ram.
Thanks.

You might want to read this thread.
BTW. With your hardware emerging KDE will take a couple of days I think.
It took ~20h with my p3 1GHz 512MB RAM. _________________ I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it. |

Thanks bsolar!
Whew!! I was seriously starting to go through computer withdrawal symptoms .
I kept coming back to an alternate root console trying to find something to do but ran out of things so I gave up and just broke out of the emerge.
Sure glad I didn't wait no 24 hours!
Excellent post you directed me to bsolar.
Thanks again.

If the emerge stops you can also use the make command in the work directory to manually complete it, then use the ebuild command to finish install and merging the package. see man ebuild for more info. _________________ Excellent.. |

I nice long emerges eg.
nice -n 15 emerge kde
The emerge churns on in the background using all the *spare* CPU, so if I need CPU for other things I nicely get it and the box stays responsive. |

That's really cool DooBeDooBeDo (quite a name you got there )
I never thought of using nice. I'll have to look into that and see what that's all about. How some of the Linux gurus on this forum remember what is where and what to use for what boggles my mind.
I guess it comes with lots and lots of repetition and practice.
Thanks again.

I think it's worth getting some kind of *nix reference book, I got O'Reilly's "Unix in a nutshell" a few years ago , and still find it useful every now and then |
