I am trying to emerge mplayer on my clean Gentoo Box (fresh install with xfree, gnome, and fluxbox, mozilla). When emerging -p it says it is going to do:

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild N ] media-sound/xmms-1.2.7-r15
[ebuild N ] media-libs/libungif-4.1.0-r1
[ebuild N ] media-video/mplayer-0.90_rc4

So I do an emerge... And it fails on this:

checking for GTK - version >= 1.2.2... no
*** Could not run GTK test program, checking why...
*** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log for the
*** exact error that occured. This usually means GTK was incorrectly installed
*** or that you have moved GTK since it was installed. In the latter case, you
*** may want to edit the gtk-config script: /usr/bin/gtk-config
configure: error: *** GTK+ >= 1.2.2 not installed - please install first ***

!!! ERROR: media-sound/xmms-1.2.7-r15 failed.
!!! Function econf, Line 262, Exitcode 1
!!! econf failed

Anyone got a clue???

Do you have gtk, gtk2, neither, or both set in USE?

emerge -s 'gtk\+' will tell you the latest version of gtk that you have installed, but if you have gtk 2.2 installed which you probably do because of Gnome, then it won't tell you whether you have gtk 1.2 installed. You could try emerge -p "<gtk+-2" and if it says it's remerging then you already have gtk-1.2 installed, if it says it's a new package then you don't. If you just want to install mplayer without xmms though you can try USE="-xmms" emerge mplayer.

Thanx for the fast replies!!!

I tried both. I have gtk 1.2 installed... together with 2.2.1...

Anyone else has this problem with emerging xmms?

What will I lose without xmms?? I don't know what xmms exactly is ;)

xmms is a winamp-like media player. It is generally used for playing mp3's and ogg's.. To be honest though, I have no idea how mplayer uses it. Another thing to try if you don't mind waiting is recompiling gtk+-1.2 by doing emerge "<gtk+-2".

I looked into it and apparently mplayer can use XMMS input plugins to play any type of sound that XMMS can play. If you only plan on using mplayer for video files and not for unusual sound files then I wouldn't worry about not having it.

Ok. I recompiled gtk 1.2, and now xmms configure didn't give me this error anymore! Looks promising!

Still weird that it didn't work in the first place. I mean, this is a fresh-n-clean install, so you would not expect weird stuff...

Anyway, I really appreciate the support on this forum!! This is my first serious Gentoo try after years of Debian, and I LIKE IT!
