eSound...so that's the trick! I cant believe it never worked before. I got sound instantly and i dont even have the ESD USE Flag and all in XMMS. As for audioctl not being persistent, that's true and ridiculously annoying but if you use the KMix mixer for KDE, as long as you have it set to dock with the panel, have Speaker (PC speaker) set to 0 and PCM (Stereo Output) set to full or whatever, it will automatically switch to stereo output every time you load KDE. In fact, i just noticed that if you have PC Speaker set to on, you can use the PCM slider to change the volume of it too.

Thanks a lot for all your help. I think i'll write a HOWTO / Tutorial for getting an Ultra 5 going so that people don't have to go through the hell that i did.

In the recently stablized version of sparc-utils (1.9-r2), there is now an init.d script for audioctl which has a corresponding conf.d file as well.
