Since I updated my kernel to 2.6.12, I get random kernel panics at boot (-r[1-5] versions didn't help). The top of the message says (more or less):
Code:

Kernel BUG at drivers/scsi/libata_core.c: 2107!
invalid operand: 0000 [#1]
PREEMPT
[...]

I have 2 gentoos, x86 and x86-64. These kernel panics only happen in x86. x86-64 works perfectly. And they are random: sometimes gentoo boots ok. I'm using the same kernel config that I used without problems in 2.6.11 (well, at least I used the same config file, of course there are some changes between versions)

Anyone else with this problem?

(edit) Sorry, I forgot my hardware:
Athlon64 3200 newcastle
MSI K8T NEO FSR (Via K8T800)
Seagate SATA 80GB 7200rpm

Try v2.6.12-rc6. There has recently been a lot of work on that file for fixing bugs that seem (?!) like yours.

Still no luck :(. I suppose I'll go back to 2.6.10 (2.6.11 is missing from portage)

Hello !

I have build a working 2.6.12-r6 kernel for my t43 laptop a few days ago, and it has worked with no problem (let say it has booted 10 times). And now it doesn't boot anymore, with exactly the same kernel panic as you get.
i don't want do downgrade my kernel, so i think i'll try to put ata driver from old kernel in my 2.6.12.
I'll post a new message if i get something to work...

regards,

sylvain

i have tried to import some file from scsi and ata from 2.6.11 sources to the 2.6.12-r6 gentoo-sources, but it doesn't work. In fact, i haven't been able to build the kernel ...
So i trid the unstable 2.6.12-gentoo-r8, and it works again ! :-)
i've booted 3 times with no problem.
So i hope it will stay working, because my previous 2.6.12-r6 worked about 10 times before stopping working...

i cross my finger :?

regards

I have exactly the same problem, with the same error. I get random kernel panics. We discussed this in another thread, and I got the impression my seagate drive had something to do with it - everyone who posted the problem had a seagate sata drive. Any truth to this? I too have tried vanilla kernels, and gone back to gentoo-2.12, but no further. Still have the error. Anyway, it's not consistent and I guess I'll live with it for the time being...
