I'm thinking of putting /etc under version control using something like subversion. Does anyone do this, and would there be any issues with doing this?

You should not put the whole of /etc under version control. Notably files like ld.so.cache and mtab (and some others) should be excluded.
I tried to do this once for all my machines and started writing some scripts but something came up so I had not much free time for a few weeks and I forgot about it.

Just use dispatch-conf + RCS.

Edit: of course, tarballing your /etc on a regular basis might not be a bad idea, either.

Well I thought it would be nice if I could create branches for diffrent configurations that I could easily switch between using "svn switch".
