If I recall correctly, LVM2 is an option of a 2.6 kernel. The LiveCD only comes with a 2.4 kernel as there are some I/O related issues in 2.6 on certain models of SPARCs (particularly SBUS based SPARCs).

My appoligies. I just assumed that the others who had reported using LVM on sparc were using LVM2 because the posts were recent.

In this case, is there a good LVM guide to mix with the install guide? Or one that is at all adaptable? This is my first LVM install/setup...

Basically - what modules need to be loaded (instead of dm-mod) and are all the other commands the same?

It seems that I can create physical volumes but not volume groups because the modules aren't loaded (i'm assuming) therefore I can't get far enough to know if the configuration differs greatly between LVM and LVM2.

I currently use lvm1 with a 2.6 kernel. I didn't set it up using the livecd, I did a normal install and then created new lvm partions for /var, /usr, /tmp & /home and then copied everything across. However, I have manipulated the partitions using the livecd so I know it supports lvm1 - support is compiled into the kernel on the CD so no modules are required.

One perculiar little trap is that you have to specify the full devfs (as the livecd is running a 2.4 kernel) device name not the symlink. As per this http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO/createvgs.html

I am trying out this guide to get a RAID1 setup with my Netra T1.
Not done yet and only trying since the guide is/was made for x86.
