I've seen quite a lot of topics covering thos subject, but none of them brought me to a solution.
My problem: I'm using a FS AmiloPro V2040 laptop, with the following audio hardware:
Code: | Class 0403: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04) |
I used the snd-hda-intel module, and also tried the snd-intel8x0 modules. I've tried the kernel module, the alsa-driver emerge, and the latest source from alsa, with no joy.
The module loadss without complaint, but there's no sound. I've played around in the mixer, trying various settings, but no joy. I've tried passing model=w810 and model=z71v to snd-hda-intel, still no joy. I've tried using headphones, using all the available jacks, still no joy.
Any other suggestions? Apart from waiting until it's fixed?
Thanx! |

jrgns,
Any errors when alsasound starts?
Check dmesg.
If you have made your sound system as modules, there will be entries in lsmod beginning snd-
What does return?
What about Code: | modprobe -l | grep snd |
Now for the silly question of the day -
Run does the time and date shown tie in with the time/date of your last kernel compile ?
If not, you are not running the kernel you think you are. _________________ Regards,

I'm not as my gentoo box now, but
There's no errors in the logs or dmesg when alsasound starts or when the modules load
All of the modules load correctly (Can't recall all of them, but the usual snd, snd-hda-intel, and a few more.)
It's the current kernel.
The thing is that there's been a lot of people talking about this particular problem: No errors or problems on loading everything, but at the end, there's no sound. Some solutions include passing model=XXX to the snd-hda-intel model or using the CVS drivers from alsa, others are more esoteric like particular mixing settings and mute combinations, or plugging in headphones into the line in plug. None of these seem to work for me, and I'm hoping someone else have stumbled upon a solution.
Thnx for trying, though! |

You must be having error message in dmesg which should look like this
Code: | hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC880, trying auto-probe from BIOS...
hda_codec: num_steps = 0 for NID=0x8
hda_codec: num_steps = 0 for NID=0x8
hda_codec: num_steps = 0 for NID=0x8 |
It is a known bug in ALSA. You HAVE to use ALSA CVS or anything >=1.0.10_rc2. This is my sound card...
Code: | 00:1b.0 Class 0403: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 03) |
Additionally you'll have to pass the following options to the module snd-hda-intel (and nothing else) when it loads
Code: | model=3stack position_fix=2 |
You also must make sure to remove all config of ALSA while compiling Kernel. Just enable Sound and disable ALSA/OSS options in kernel config. |

The only errors I get in dmesg are
Code: |
ALSA /var/tmp/portage/alsa-driver-1.0.9b/work/alsa-driver-1.0.9b/alsa-kernel/pci/hda/hda_intel.c:458: azx_get_response timeout
|
I searched a bit but found nothing conclusive. Anyone seen this? I also tried passing model=azx and model=3stack as well, no happiness... |

snd_hda_intel 13824 2
snd_hda_codec 69120 1 snd_hda_intel

snd_page_alloc 7748 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm
Nothing strange that I can see... |

Hello,
I'm having the same problem.
My soundcard is:
Code: | 0000:00:1b.0 Class 0403: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01) |
When booting I get:
Code: | Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.9rc2 (Thu Mar 24 10:33:39 2005 UTC).
ALSA device list:
No soundcards found. |
Alsa boot script however works, no complaints ... (I run it here manually in order to provide example)
Code: | laura jan # /etc/init.d/alsasound restart
* WARNING: you are stopping a boot service.
* Storing ALSA Mixer Levels ... [ ok ]
* Unloading ALSA ... [ ok ]
* Unloading ALSA modules ... [ ok ]
* Loading ALSA modules ...
* Loading: snd-card-0 ... [ ok ]
* Restoring Mixer Levels ... |
When I run sound mixer (Xfce sound mixer) I see only basic PCM volume control bar ..
Everything seems to work (no complains when running XMMS, etc.) however I can hear no sound.
I have loaded only these modules ... is it all right ?
Code: |
laura Unicode # lsmod | grep snd
snd_hda_intel 13920 5
snd_hda_codec 57088 1 snd_hda_intel |
Thanks

If you look closely you are doing exactly what I mentioned in my post.
You are passing the options to the loading module by using alsa script |

I just upgraded to kernel 2.6.14-r2 and alsa driver 1.0.10-r3
I actually get sound now, but with a high pitched noise...
When I change any of the playback controls, all sound cuts off.
This happens with various model parameters (w810, z71v, 3stack) as well as fix_position passed to the module.
I still get the azx_get_response timeout error in dmesg. The following get's logged in my kernel log:
ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:00:1b.0 disabled
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:1b.0[A] -> Link [LNKA] -> GSI 10 (level, low) -> IRQ 10
The device referred to is my soundcard.
Could acpi be interfering with my sound card? |

I had problems very similar to yours on my ASUS z33a. I solved (most of) them by building sound support right into my kernel.
Key to making this work was choosing the "Intel HDA" option when compiling the kernel (If I remember correctly, it was hidden at the end of the menu). Perhaps this can help you as well.
On a slightly related note, CDs now play, but with scratch and static.
EDIT: CD only seems to be a problem with GNOMEs basic CD player. CDs play fine with Xine. |

Ok. Got something this time.
I played around again, and got sound with passing
Code: | model=3stack-digout position_fix=1 |
to the module. It also worked with
Code: | model=5stack-digout position_fix=1 |
This is with alsa 1.0.10rc3. Sound dissapears when you adjust the volume though. Unload, reload module, sound is fine again. |

HI.
I got EXACT the same problem on my Samsung M50 Notebook. Sound works, but it is too loud. When I try to adjust the volume in alsamixer, sound cuts off.
BUT...
after putting
Code: |
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-digout position_fix=1
|
in my /etc/modules.d/alsa file the alsamixer woked fine (THANK YOU )
but still i have to stop music first and then adjust the volume. If I do it simultaniusly, the sound cuts off again.
There must be a solution for this. For I have a annoying scratch noise permenentely. _________________ gentoo-kernel-2.6.14-r5

Hello!
I have the same problem as you on my notebook Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pro v2045.
lspci | grep -i audio
Code: | 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04) |
uname -a
Code: | Linux angel 2.6.14-gentoo-r5 #15 PREEMPT Wed Jan 18 19:07:12 CET 2006 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.73GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux |
I tried alsa-driver, alsa-driver built in kernel and every time got the same problems. Firstly I had problem with alsaconf and gpm (reported bug); than got no sound; than I managed to get the sound with a high pitched noise and finally (with alsa-driver ebuild) i can get a clear sound, BUT only for a short time. Only for first (or second) time I play something in mplayer (or some different player). Then the soundcard appears not to work.
Code: | cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp |
doesn't play anything
cat /etc/modules.d/alsa
Code: | alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-digout position_fix=1
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel |
lsmod | grep -i snd
Code: | snd_pcm_oss 49504 0
snd_mixer_oss 17088 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_seq_oss 34304 0
snd_seq_midi_event 6016 1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq 50640 4 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_seq_device 7116 2 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq
snd_hda_intel 14288 0
snd_hda_codec 88512 1 snd_hda_intel
snd_pcm 83272 3 snd_pcm_oss,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec
snd_timer 22084 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd 50148 9 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer
snd_page_alloc 8520 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm
|
No error in dmesg, only
Code: | ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:00:1b.0 disabled
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:1b.0[A] -> Link [LNKA] -> GSI 10 (level, low) -> IRQ 10
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:1b.0 to 64 |
I'm getting desperate about this because i'm trying this for almost 4 hours... I think i tried everything .
Does anybody have any suggestions?
Thx a lot. |

I've figured out the way how to get the soundcard again to work, as you said,
Code: | modprobe -r snd_hda_intel
/etc/init.d/alsasound restart |
... and then i have a sound for next short time :-/ ...
don't know the causes and time (but it isn't so long) after the soundcard stop playing but it is not during playing... |

Try to mute your Front and PCM channel and then unmute it then.
I bought a SoundBlaster Live (couldn't wait for a fix..) and my problems are solved.. Works flawlessly with raising/lowering sound volumes etc.. |

I'm getting the sound with a high pitched sound in the background again . No changes were made.
But I've tried almost every combination with alsamixer (and with front and pcm as you said), but there is still the whistling sound . |

i had the same problem with no sound on my sony vaio although alsa loaded just fine.
my solution was using kernel 2.6.17. obviously, the intal hda doesn't work with the alsa version of kernel 2.6.16. i too have only a pcm device in alsamixer, but in gnome, i have master, pcm and capture. works just fine. |

Interesting... I have the same type of card: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)
However, I've had very few problems from it.
I will say this though- try unmerging alsa-utils, alsa-tools, and (if you have it) alsa-driver.
Then enable the module in the kernel, and make sure you do built-in support for ALSA in the kernel.
Recompile the kernel, re-emerge any other kernel packages, but DO NOT install alsa-utils or alsa-tools!!!!
Reboot, and try it again, starting with root, then users.
edit: make sure to unmute your card in w/e desktop environment you use.
Granted, ditching alsa-utils means ditching alsamixer, but I know at least gnome
has it's own mixer, and I'm sure KDE does too. _________________ The vast majority of errors are stupid mistakes that you end up kicking yourself for later. |
